Quote
Alabama dodged the rain, thunder and hail to complete its 18th practice of the preseason.

Nick Saban was here to discuss it.

Here were the highlights.

-- Saban asked if anyone told us that he was in a bad mood. We were not warned.

-- "I think it's really important that we have enough mental toughness and enough maturity that we finish the right way."

-- Biggest focus for this weekend's scrimmage is improvement.

-- No new injuries to report.

-- On Jesse Williams: "I thought Jesse played really well last year." Williams' early focus was on instincts, Saban said.. "Very smart, very prideful, hard worker. Really doing a great job." ...

I feel bad for Kenny Bell, his has looked good at times then he has had problems. never really making it on the filed on a consistant basis. He has the speed and makes good cuts...not saying he has catch problems...but he did drop a few.

Hope he gets better and has a good year.

This is great news for our WR position. I think Jones will be dynamic and a possible game changer, along with Norwood.

Quote
On the returning wide receivers: Kevin Norwood has had a "great camp, great spring." Other returners, such as Christion Jones and DeAndrew White, have also done well.

Great report. I notice all was covered except running backs. I am thinking it is going to be a 2 tandem or tri-back sets. We have some good runners this year and a nice OL. RTR!

I doubt it, Preacher.  I'd bet those sets are for short yardage and goalline situations.

I was just listening to AJ on XM radio, interviewd by Jack aroot(sp) .

Anyway he said this year Saban has been yelling at him in practice to trhow it down the field.

I imagine it was because someone was open and AJ didnt see it, but I still think that Saban wants to strech the field more and open up even bigger holes for the RB's to run througn.  Thoughts?

This isn't rocket science.  "Stretch the field" has been a catch phrase from everyone criticizing our offense for years.  Alabama has lived by short passes and a power running game.  It works.

The passing game indeed opens holes for the running game, and vice versa.  Long passes warrant a soap box.

Throwing long isn't within the plan of every play.  Despite what some people think, a QB can't decide to throw long (and seldom has time to do that) on every pass play.  There are plays that include that option, some not ("check downs").  Most commonly, a wide-open deep receiver results from a missed assignment in the DBs.  That's when one hopes the QB sees it (and when CNS yells at AJ to throw it).  More commonly, the deep receiver draws the safety and a CB deep with him, allowing another receiver underneath.

This could go on, but I think it's clear enough.  Bottom line: a team must send receivers deep occasionally, and must throw toward them occasionally, to "keep the safety honest" (i.e., stretch the field).  It's not for everyone, every offense, every game plan, or every QB.

I don't remember Bama ever having a receiving core with this much talent paired with QB that can get the ball anywhere on the field.

... and an offensive line talented and powerful enough to protect the QB.

Well played, sir.
I was once mistaken for Wayne Cook at a restaurant.  I never met him, but I guess we look somewhat alike (or used to).
