Michigan's motto for opener opposite Alabama: Win one for the Big Ten

CHICAGO -- Deep into his Physics II class this summer, Michigan safety Jordan Kovacs would flip open his computer and get even deeper. Into Alabama's offense.

"I shouldn't admit it but I watch [film] in class a little bit," Kovacs said Friday at Big Ten media days. "Every now and then you just shake your head. They're the best team I've ever played."

And he'll be reminded of that Sept. 1.

The (college football) world is watching. Alabama will come into the game ranked in the top five and chasing a third national title in four years. You might have heard about the SEC's stranglehold in that department. Two of those six consecutive title-game wins have come against Big Ten teams. Speaking of Ohio State, the Buckeyes had been 0-9 against the SEC in bowl games until beating Arkansas a couple of years ago.

Must have slipped his mind that the win against Arky was vacated.

D-Rob's challenge: To cut down on his interceptions and what offensive coordinator Al Borges calls "indiscriminate decision making." Robinson threw a career-high 15 interceptions and completed only 55 percent of his passes. Hoke may want to shape is quarterback into more of a pocket passer -- his rushing total dipped by more than 600 yards -- but Robinson is best when he improvises.

Borges knows that. Hoke knows that. The Tide know that. That's why they're watching film too. Summer school is over. "That's the only thing we've been thinking about for quite a while now," Kovacs said.

Becoming a pocket passer against Bama will cause him to improvise early and often.

I agree the win against Arky was vacated but that is just like any wins by a team. They will always be the thought that the team that vacated, won the game on the field in your face that day. This is why vacating doesn't matter to me, even Alabama vacated wins but they beat the tar out of people in their face. RTR!

Michigan needs to quit worrying about our defense and worry about Lacy, Fowler, McCann, D. White, K. Bell, Norwood, etc.

True, but those players should never have been allowed on the field in the first place for the Sugar Bowl -- it was worse than the Cam Newton situation, so bad that the "win" was vacated in record time.

I was at the Orange Bowl in 2000, when Bama lost to Michigan on a missed extra point in overtime, after leading for most of the game.  So I REALLY want to see Bama dominate Michigan in 34 days.  Heck, I might even be at the game...

Winning 35-34 against a coach like Dumbose was not domination. I still can't think of a game against the SEC in a bowl game that was a runaway or was dominated by the Big Ten.

I REALLY hate to bring this one up, but there was the year Bama went to the Music City Bowl and got handled fairly well by Minnesota. That was the year (2004 ?) they had Marion Barber and Laurence Maroney. Granted, Spencer Pennington was starting since Croyle was out hurt.

As I remember, score was not indicative of the game. We had 21 yards rushing, two turnovers, 0-11 on third down conversions, and had only 264 yards of offense. Minnesota ran for 276 yards on our defense. It may not have been complete domination, but it was not that close either.
