The idiot shooter just turned himself in to a Jasper police officer. Jasper has turned him over to Tuscaloosa. They will put him away for a long time.

Meanwhile.... Here in Ocala yesterday, two thugs (one with a gun) walk into an internet cafe and attempt to rob the place.  A 71 year old guy sitting in the back with a concealed weapons permit shoots & wounds both of the thugs.

Here's a follow-up story:

What kind of idiot let's a 2 year play with a real gun (even if he thinks it isn't loaded)?

I really don't care what kind of idiot that is. I just care that idiots like this exist in large numbers and the NRA vehemently believes that it's a good idea for each and every one of them to have a gun, because it would make life safer for all of us.

I don't own a gun (yet) and have no idea what is required to get one.  Guns should be for responsible folks like the 71 year old guy from Ocala and not the idiot who shot the 17 or the idiot in Syria that let his 2 year old play with it.

I have never felt the need to own a gun, but in recent years I have been thinking about getting one.  Especially every time I see one of these mass shooting stories.

It's a thorny issue coach.

Let's just hope the last of the hospitalized recover, and then we can get back to FOOTBALL.

In Alabama, no felony convictions and $15 and you can get a concealed permit in 15 minutes. The permit is also good in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and several other states.

Most gun accidents don't happen in NRA homes. Crack heads and buffoons leaving guns laying around but the libs are quick to lump them all together. Everyone has a gun (or several) here, everyone carries a gun, but you never hear of an accident. Libs just hate the NRA and are willing to make statistics lie in order to move their agenda. BTW, I am not an NRA member but when these eggheads continuously attack them it must mean they (NRA) are pushing the right buttons.

Wow, what a loser. The only positive to this whole situation is he was probably using something like a Marlin .22 rifle. The model 100 holds like 15-17 rounds, allowing him to shoot a lot. If he was using a larger caliber rifle like a .223, .308, or .270, we would have had many dead. I hope all of these folks are going to be okay. Was this a college-age type of bar or a country music bar or what?

Well, so much for logic. Apparently, he did have an "assault" weapon.

The suspect arrested Tuesday in the Tuscaloosa, Ala., bar shooting spree that left 17 people injured is also suspected of setting fire to his former workplace a few hours afterward, NBC station WVTM in Tuscaloosa reported.

The News quoted Sgt. Brent Blankley, of the Tuscaloosa Police, as saying the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at Copper Top bar. A gunman with a military-style assault rifle fired at least 11 shots into the bar in the city’s Temerson Square.

The shooter then fired at fleeing patrons.

Barfield told the paper the man said he had been at the bar high on drugs "and a few other things."

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steven Anderson said at least one victim in the bar was the shooter’s target.

Many of the AR 15 assault rifles have a relatively inexpensive conversion kit which allows it to fire .22 cal. rounds.  Makes for much less expensive target shooting.  My son, a former combat Marine, has one of these.  Pretty neat.

Sheesh, you spend $1000-$1200 on an AR-15 and then change it to .22 cal. You can buy the Marlin model 100 for $120. It doesn't make any sense.

Not trying to justify it, just trying to explain that it is possible that the shooter has an assault type rifle which was small caliber.  They are petty common now days on the gun ranges where I shoot.

Haven't seen a ballistics report but .22  cal ammunition should not be dismissed as harmless or less dangerous. While the velocity is not sufficient for long distances, the bullet will tend to tumble upon impact. This destroys more tissue than a shot going straight through a target. Not sure what a test would show at point blank range.
