Quote
... It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention, and nowhere in America was it more apparent that a quarterback was needed to wear purple and gold than in the Superdome last January.

But the invention…the idea that Zach Mettenberger, who hasn’t taken a meaningful college snap, of any kind, is going to save the world and lead LSU to a title is baffling. Even in Les Miles country, where baffling happens every day.

I remember when Tim Tebow graduated. I honestly heard a radio interview with a member of the Florida media saying that John Brantley, at the time Tebow’s backup, “might honestly be better than Tim Tebow”, and was the second best quarterback in the country the year before. We see how that turned out.

Long story short, it is utterly amazing the premium we humans place on “the unknown.” Nowhere is this more apparent that in sports, when we so desperately want something to be true. I don’t mean to get all philosophical, especially on a Saturday, but where have all the reasonable people gone?

I have no doubt that Mettenberger will be good; programs like LSU get good quarterbacks. But if he were better than what they had, wouldn’t he have made an appearance in New Orleans a few months ago? It is proposterous to think a team would hold anything…ANYTHING…back when the crystal football is on the line....

Those cajuns are known for never being short for words, I'm thinking somebody spiked the gumbo with some voodoo powder and they're illucinating. I can't remember when they had a great quarterback, there might have been some that was fairly good.

I can't get over their insistence that Jefferson lost the BCSNC game for them.  They seem to think that Mettenberger is the final piece of the puzzle, and somehow he'll win despite Les Miles.  I'll be surprised if they stay out of jail by season opening.

LSU has recruited a lot of players with great potential but I not so sure that Miles can get the job done with them. He's been blessed with a lot of lucky breaks during the past years and I have to wonder if this isn't the year that their luck goes sour on them.

I agree, they've lived on talent.
Something nobody seems to be discussing is the concept at LSU.  One of the keys to beating them in the NCG last year was the simplicity of their schemes.  If you remember, last year they decided to simplify their D and their O.  They were successful because they executed that simple play so well.  It was a good strategy for players with great talent and limited dedication (so it worked if they were too lazy to learn a complex playbook).  Certainly by now everyone knows their schemes; that's got to catch up with them.

Like most SEC QB's he has potential. Les Miles and staff recruit very good players but the offensive players, especially QB's, do not develop and get better with experience at LSU. I think part of the problem is they can not decide what type offense they want to run. One game they throw 20 long balls hoping to connect on 4-5 of them. The next game they want to be a power team running between the tackles. Against Alabama in the BCSCG they go away from what they did all year and become an option/screen team.

This is why I say that I don't think that Miles can coach them up to the medias expectations. If you look back at the past, there are a lot of games that LSU should have lost but lucked out and won. Their fans know this and it's just a matter of time that these lucky breaks don't happen and Les Miles is looking for another job.

I am confident that CNS will have a plan to contain the awesomeness of of the Z-burger. Note: Four down linemen not pictured.

We used to say he was winning because of Saban's players. Then we said he was lucky but the luck would run out. He keeps winning somehow. I have decided he recruits good enough to overcome his lack of coaching ability. I do give him credit for hiring DC Chavas. They have a very good defensive team.

Bert Jones comes to mind. Before that, I think Y.A. Tittle. Two Better than average QB's in the school's history. They are a regular QB supermill. I have a feeling Mettlinburg may be as good as Matt Mauck at best.
