Alabama's Grant happy for old VCU team

Second-year Alabama coach Anthony Grant was surrounded by reporters when he entered the Broadway Lounge of the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square on Monday afternoon, to meet with the media a day prior to the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden.

Except, no one really wanted to talk about the Crimson Tide (except Grant, that is). Instead, Grant fielded question after question about Virginia Commonwealth, his former school, which extended its Cinderella run all the way to the Final Four by beating Kansas on Sunday.

"It's a tremendous accomplishment," Grant said. "It's very rare to see teams from non-BCS conferences that have a chance to do what they've done. So I think it speaks volumes of the job that Shaka [Smart] and his staff have done, the team, the administration at VCU."

Guess who they have as the favorite to win the tournament.  Cheesy

While the college basketball world is buzzing about next weekend’s NCAA tournament Final Four in Houston, we've got a Final Four of our own right here in our backyard, competing for the National Invitation Tournament championship.

It may lack the prestige of the Big Dance, but four quality teams have descended on the Big Apple this week -- three teams from BCS conferences, and a member of one of the best mid-major conferences in the country. They'll play on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Madison Square Garden, airing on ESPN2. And here's a preview of what you'll see:

PREDICTION

Alabama's defense is strong enough for the Crimson Tide to prevail over Colorado, while Klay Thompson has a big game in leading Washington State over Wichita State. And in the championship game on Thursday night, Alabama puts the shackles on Thompson, and Anthony Grant gets to hoist the NIT trophy, before watching his former players take on Butler in a fairy-tale NCAA national semifinal.

Practice Report: March 26: Spring Practice #4

Written by nxojkt | 27 March 2011

The Alabama football team practiced for the fourth time in the 2011 Spring Football Practice period on Saturday. The full pads practice was moved inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility due to rain in the Tuscaloosa area.

Here's what you need to know: (Summary: for full article Click Here )

-Brandon Moore has joined Robby Green in being indefinitely suspended.

-Tyler Love was absent from Saturday's practice. Coach Saban indicated that he took a blow to the head and could possibly have a concussion. Details pending.

- The same group of guys who had been practicing in black are still in black - Mark Barron (pectoral), Jarrick Williams (shoulder), Nick Perry (shoulder), Jonathan Atchison (bicep), and Brad Smelley (wrist). Only Barron is thought to be out for an extended period.

-Coach Saban indicated in the his post practice news conference that Dee Hart, Trey DePriest, and Vinnie Sunseri have stood out among the early enrollee freshmen.

-Coach Saban indicated that D. Hart could make an immediate impact on special teams

-Hart has spent all of his time as close to Trent Richardson as possible, soaking up the knowledge that the veteran has. C.J. Mosley did this with Dont'a Hightower last year, and that paid dividends.

-Coach Saban also indicated that he expects all three of the junior college transfers to make an immediate impact.

-Kellen Williams was a little thought of recruit coming out of high school and has impressed the staff with his ability to adjust to changes in technique.

Congrats to CAG and the team on representing us so well this season and through the NIT even though they had their hearts set on the NCAAs.

Looking forward to the game against the Buffs.  We have a great shot at bringing home the NIT title and are in great shape to make a run deep into the NCAAs next season.

TUSCALOOSA -- Nick Saban's voice sounded a little raspy Saturday after the completion of Alabama's first week of practice.

He said the Crimson Tide has shown improvement, but noted passing and catching the football had been an issue. Saturday's indoor practice helped eliminate the wind, and Saban credited the receivers with making progress.

Saban said the defensive line needs to show more physical toughness this week, and he praised the offensive line.

"The offensive line has done a pretty good job of getting a hat on a hat, blocking people and finishing, and the runners have done a good job of finding the holes, so that has been a good thing," Saban said.

WHAT'S NEXT? Alabama will hold its fifth spring practice Monday afternoon, its third in full pads. Alabama will practice three times this week before holding its first scrimmage Saturday afternoon.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama baseball team completed a series sweep of the Kentucky Wildcats with an 8-3 victory on Sunday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Crimson Tide (18-7, 5-1 SEC) has now won seven games in a row, including five straight in the SEC, and improves to 16-1 at home. Kentucky drops to 14-11 overall and 2-5 in SEC play.

"Anytime you can sweep someone in the SEC you are doing something right, but I think it all starts on the mound," UA head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "The difference in the series to me was that our guys were able to take us into the sixth and seventh innings and that shortens down the bullpen for you. It was a good week for us, we played fairly well in all five games, so we get five wins. Now we have to take that into next week."

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Behind the 100th career victory of senior Kelsi Dunne, the No. 1 ranked Alabama softball team earned a 9-0 victory over Arkansas, Sunday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium. With the win, the Crimson Tide earn the series sweep and improve to 33-2 overall and 9-1 in Southeastern Conference play.

"With all the games we have been playing it can be really nerve racking," Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. "We have done a great job thus far in not losing our concentration and focus. We need to keep our drive and stay in it mentally as we go forward."

Dunne tossed four innings, scattered three hits and did not allow a run while striking out seven and walking none. Freshman Jackie Traina came in to pitch the final inning and allowed one hit while striking out two batters. Dunne grabs her 16th win of the season, and only trails Shelly Laird in career total wins. Laird holds the record for Alabama with 115 career victories.

Sophomore Kayla Braud paced the Tide at the plate with a pair of hits and two runs scored. Junior Amanda Locke drove in a pair and hit her third home run in the series to lead the power surge for Alabama.

NIT — Blessing in disguise for Tide?

By Michael Casagrande
Staff Writer

TUSCALOOSA — A first-round NCAA loss or an NIT semifinal?

That was the debate among two fans in the Coleman Coliseum hallway Wednesday night. Alabama had just qualified for the latter, but the former is the measure of programs on the rise.

Taking a step back and looking big picture, the Crimson Tide program is best served playing for a title in New York. A Tuesday-night loss in Dayton on an obscure cable channel wouldn’t have created quite the momentum towards the next step in Anthony Grant’s master plan.

Strange as it may sound, the NIT is a blessing in disguise for Grant...
FULL STORY

I agree 100%.  The total rewards we will reap from this NIT final four run and the excitement that it is building for Bama Bball is much more important in helping CAG continue his successful building process than a 1- or 2- and done in the NCAAs.

TUSCALOOSA - Ring the chimes. Spread the big news. NBA prospect JaMychal Green will return next season for his senior year at Alabama.

The star forward made the decision last week. He made the announcement Wednesday after a 79-64 victory over Miami in the NIT quarterfinals, if you can call a few words with Anthony Grant an announcement. No microphone. No cameras. The news never made it out of the Crimson Tide's locker room.

The stoic coach's reaction?

"He had a big smile on his face," Green said. "He gave me a hug and told me he loved me."
