Bama survives Colorado rally to make title game

A team that has survived on defense all season long needed a single stop to advance to the NIT Championship - and got it.

The University of Alabama scored on a Trevor Releford layup with 12.6 seconds remaining, then did enough defensively to make Colorado star Alec Burks miss a jump shot as time expired, lifting UA to a 62-61 victory over the Buffalos at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

"Defense is what gives this team a chance to win," Crimson Tide head coach Anthony Grant said. "That's what won for us tonight."
The win puts Alabama into Thursday's NIT title game against Wichita State, which blew out Washington State in the first semifinal.

Hey guys - practice report

Congrats to the Bama basketball team in NY at the bball Mecca MSG

Ok lots of stuff to get too sorry it took me a while again and again I'm extremely busy right now so just getting on here as often and as soon after practice as I can even though it's so late LoL

Ok 1st off, I told you guys a few weeks ago about the possibility of landing Duron Carter and it looks like a strong possibility now and he would be Junior and be enrolling this summer so 3 yrs to play 2 and would be an immediate impact as long as he can get the playbook down. He's a big physical athletic WR with a little different game than Julio, but similar, he's visiting this upcoming weekend and will likely leave as a Bama commit.

A lot of people may think we are pursuing him because of a lack of WRs to replace a hole left by Julio, not true in fact Duron, Cofeyville HC (who Saban and Kirby already have a relationship with) and daddy Cris Carter  contacted Bama he wants to play for a championship program and Dad wants Duron to "grow up and become a man" and Ohio St wasn't meeting his son's needs

More DL are breaking out and again our depth is really impressive, Damion Square is separating himself and he got to strip off his knee brace and man oh man did it make a world of difference, he admitted to the media he sort of used it as a crutch and in his head thought his knee wasn't ready but it really was, he just wasn't confident enough in it, he's an absolute animal now like I said it's ridiculous, another guy who's really stepped up and is pushing to get in the 2nd rotation behind Upshaw, Adrian Hubbard is doing all the right things and really starting to impress and break into the rotation at Jack

The legend of Vinnie Sunseri continues man watching him in practice he's just a flat out fball player. Coach just looks at Mark at times and says "you didn't make that read" just very impressive he's moving his way up the depth chart

Also both JuCo DT's continue to be impressive, what has been so impressive and mind boggling to me is the role reversal seemingly than what most of us thought with both coming in, Dial's a lot larger and Jesse Bama's Aussie has slimmed down and has become a more elusive and he already has elite upper body strength and the speed to get out on the end and rush sort of the way Dareus played and Quinton Dial is now gonna be an inside guy and get a good bit of PT, well both guys are, very interesting development so far

The TE battle is starting to really heat up, Micheal Williams is HUGE and has shown his blocking and catching skills all Spring, he's begging to win the starting job and to be a factor in the offensive game plan, Smelley will be a senior and the Hback, Harrison Jones really stretches out the D the way he can catch, made some VERY impressive catches this Spring definitely our best hands at TE

The group of RBs has been solid, Jalston Fowler has been a cruncher in a lot of different drills definitely gotten better at blocking which will get him more PT this year

Overall it has been a week and a half of VERY impressive Spring practices, the D is fast, strong, HUGE, impressive group all around, more talent maybe than any Saban coached D, the offense is fast explosive, lots of experience and a ground game to DIE for, overall an impressive group of guys this year.

Rapid Reaction: Alabama 62, Colorado 61

A quick take on Alabama's 62-61 win over Colorado on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden:

WHAT IT MEANS: Alabama defeats fellow No. 1 seed Colorado in the National Invitation Tournament semifinals, and advances to the championship game. The Crimson Tide (25-11) have only been to the NIT final once before -- in 2001, when they lost to Tulsa.

The Buffaloes -- the NIT champions way back in 1940 -- finish their season at 24-14. The 24 wins are the most in school history.

Alabama is making sure Anthony Grant stays focused on his own team rather than watching his former team's incredible NCAA tournament run.

JaMychal Green scored 22 points, Trevor Releford scored the go-ahead basket in the closing seconds, and Grant's top-seeded Crimson Tide withstood a late rally to beat Colorado 62-61 in the NIT semifinals Tuesday night.

Releford finished with 13 points and six assists for the Crimson Tide (25-11), who advanced to play Wichita State on Thursday night for the championship. The Shockers beat Washington State 75-44 in the other semifinal game at Madison Square Garden.

Alabama trailed 61-60 with 12 seconds left when Releford slipped along the baseline and scored the go-ahead basket. After a timeout, Colorado got the ball into the hands of sophomore star Alec Burks, whose off-balanced shot at the buzzer clanked off the rim.

Alabama’s Richardson Ready to Strike Heisman Pose

Alabama Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson has emerged from the shadows of former Heisman winner Mark Ingram and is ready to shoulder the load for the Tide in 2011.

For the last two years, Trent Richardson has made a name for himself in Tuscaloosa, but he’s always been the #2 guy. That is no longer the case with Mark Ingram leaving a year early for the NFL. Richardson is indisputably the leading man in Alabama’s backfield and he will have to shoulder a huge load this season.

Given the self-made pickle Jim Tressel finds himself in, and the basketball team’s loss in the NCAA tournament as a No. 1 seed, it’s not been the best of months for two of the Ohio State University’s flagship athletic programs.  And, apparently, the negativity surrounding the school is set to continue.

Advance copies of the HBO special I discussed this morning have gone out to some media members, and Brooks of SPORTSbyBrooks has spilled the beans on some of the content. Specifically, the worst of it is in the second taped segment done by Andrea Kremer.

In it, four former Auburn players claim they got paid to go to Auburn. They are Stanley McClover, Chaz Ramsey, Troy Reddick, and Raven Gray. Some of the money quotes from McClover:

Broncos to take Marcell Dareus?

No. 2 Denver Broncos: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama
I had the Broncos taking Da’Quan Bowers with this pick in my second mock, but since then they’ve released Jamal Williams and, in a rather surprising move, Justin Bannan. Those moves open up a huge need at defensive tackle and Dareus’ stock continues to soar. The question is, will the Broncos look to trade this pick knowing that QB-needy teams draft behind them? They may lose the opportunity to take Dareus, but maybe they can trade back and still land Nick Fairley (a nice consolation prize).

Demetrius Hart hasn't played in a single game for the Alabama Crimson Tide.  He's barely through his first week of spring practice.  How in the world could he put Javier Arenas' SEC punt return record of 1,725 career yards in jeopardy, a record that previously stood for over sixty years?
