Alabama defensive end Damion Square back on track

TUSCALOOSA -- One of the most liberating moments for Damion Square was his decision to finally remove a knee brace this spring.

The device had become a security blanket of sorts, helping him deal with the concerns of a possible setback.

Square has recovered from a torn ACL and meniscus, which ended his sophomore season during a 40-14 win over Florida International in 2009.

"I wore the brace through last year because there was a fear of taking it off," Square said. "It almost became a part of me. Taking it off this spring, I go home and I'm like, 'Man, my knee is unbelievable.' It probably has been this way for a while, but I wasn't trusting it. I gave it a chance this spring and there's no looking back."

Alabama vs. Wichita State: It will be rough vs. tough for the NIT championship

NEW YORK - Monet. ... Rembrandt. ... Van Gogh. ... Their priceless paintings are on display here at the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Mitchell. ... Releford. ... Green. ... Their work will be displayed tonight a few miles away at the famed Madison Square Garden. They'll go to work in the paint, and the result don't have to be pretty to come away with the prize: a little sculpture that is the NIT championship trophy.

But there's an obstacle for a program that never has won an NIT title. Wichita State works the paint pretty well, too. The Shockers (28-8) and the Crimson Tide (25-11) will start mixing it up at 6 p.m. CDT.

"We're physical," Wichita State senior guard Graham Hatch said.

"We're disruptive," Alabama freshman point guard Trevor Releford said.

Call it rough vs. tough.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 21-ranked University of Alabama baseball team (19-8) took home the 4-3 victory over South Alabama (13-11) in walk-off fashion, Wednesday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. After a back-and-forth battle, the Tide came away with the win in the bottom of the ninth thanks to an RBI single from Brock Bennett to plate Taylor Dugas.

"One thing that's encouraging, that this team has been able to do, is find ways to win games," UA head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "Midweek games can get tough at times, but I thought we battled and we did a good job in the ninth inning."

Bennett, who sacrificed himself twice previously on the night, was allowed to swing away in the final inning, knocking a grounder up the middle to bring around Dugas from second. Bennett ended his night 2-for-3 with two RBI and two sac bunts. Dugas also excelled, going 1-for-1 on the night with three runs and a career-high four walks, reaching base all five plate appearances

2011 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Alabama DT Marcell Dareus

Quote:
Marcell Dareus is one of the best players in the entire draft, putting aside position for a moment. You might know him best–or you might not–for knocking out Texas quarterback Colt McCoy in the National Championship game. You might also know him for making Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins afraid of defensive tackles. Okay, that last one is not true, but you get the idea. Marcell Dareus had a bit of a “down” junior season, but displayed the consistent ability to disrupt plays and be a dominant defensive lineman at the NFL level.

TUSCALOOSA | With three University of Alabama safeties withheld from contact this spring, Robert Lester couldn’t be faulted for wondering if a little bad luck were involved. Lester and Will Lowery are the most game-experienced safeties UA has at full speed for the moment, but UA coach Nick Saban indicated that the safeties who have been limited this spring—Mark Barron, Jarrick Williams and Nick Perry - will still have a role Saturday when the Crimson Tide holds its first scrimmage of spring.

Grant-ed, it’s not the March Tide wanted, but …

Anthony Grant has had quite a postseason.

It’s not the postseason the Alabama hoops coach wanted. That would have involved a happier Selection Sunday, but consider the big picture for a second-year coach.

His current team played its way into NCAA Tournament consideration and answered a crushing snub by the selection committee by romping to the NIT’s grand end game in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

And his former teams?

Well, Virginia Commonwealth — its star players all recruited by Grant — just played its way from the First Four In to the Final Four.

Florida, which won the first of two consecutive national titles while Grant served as associate head coach, made it to this year’s Elite Eight.

What does it all mean in the here and now for Alabama?

Duron Carter in all likelihood will be signed
Goodbread likes DeAndrew White, fast changing directions & good routes
Kenny Bell not as good a route runner, but longer reach and jump ability
Chris Jordan inside LB probably won't be with #1s, but good backup tackle right or left
some old SI article saying women went crazier for Joe Namath in NY than the Beatles, and they talk about the cover below
How much are the players motivated by the posters saying "Never Again"? no answer
Corey Grant may move to cornerback
Demetrius Goode, 5th yr Sr., probably won't get any snaps
All players now are Saban recruits
Bama is primed for a big season
A-Day will tell us a lot about game situation and the pecking order going into camp

This is CNS favorite time of year, first & foremost he's a teacher & Spring is the time to teach
@1:50 does this team have potential to make the plays that would've won LSU, barn, SC games last year?
@2:40 clip of CNS on QBs being overwhelmed
Orr wouldn't be surprised early in the season to see both QBs playing
@4:10 Blake Sims is emergency only and Ely they want to redshirt
@4:40 clip of Maze saying Hanks, Maze, Gibson will fill Julio void
@5:35 Orr's take on WRs -- K Norwood has potential to make big plays & Cignetti before he left was high on Norwood, DeAndrew White & Kenny Bell have speed
@6:45 early enrollees that may contribute --
Hart as a RB and punt returner, reminds Orr of Javy when he gets his hands on the ball
Douglas was RT at TN, LT at JC, but he needs to get bigger, good height & frame & very very athletic
Jesse is very athletic & has Dareus potential, he's still working outside at DE
@11:30 recruiting update
Duron Carter leaning pretty strong Bama over Miami, LSU -- if visit goes well wouldn't surprise Orr to have a quick commitment -- would arrive in June
@12:23 Marvin Bracy WR 5'10" 171 -- 2nd fastest human under 17 in the world -- Bama, A&M, LSU, FSU he told Orr last week are his top 4 -- FSU might be the team to beat
@13:09 Gunner Kiel QB 6'4" 215 -- uncle Blair Kiel -- maybe best HS QB in country -- in T-town yesterday on unofficial visit
@13:52 Beniquez Brown RB 6'2" 208 -- visit last weekend -- if he came to Bama would prolly begin at safety -- he told Orr the Bama visit put us in lead over the barn
@14:20 Jeremy Liggins ATH 6'5" 260 -- very fast -- would get a look at QB & was impressive last year at camp -- Bama leader among many other big schools
@17:35 basketball recruits
@19:42 softball game -- Dunne won 100th game
