The University of Alabama football team practiced indoors Saturday as rains were expected in Tuscaloosa with many high school coaches still on campus attending practice as part of the UA coaches clinic. Here were some practice observations from Saturday.

Love, others vie at center

TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama center William Vlachos projects as a third-year starter this fall and has as much game experience as anyone on the UA offensive line.
But the depth behind Vlachos at that position isn’t nearly as clear a picture. And filling the void left by former UA backup David Ross, who has graduated, is one challenge for a few of UA’s less experienced blockers.
Fourth-year junior Tyler Love worked at center for the first two practices of spring, and Kellen Williams has seen some action there as well, along with redshirt freshman Chad Lindsey.

Alabama Baseball Earns 6-5 Win Thanks to Late-Inning Heroics

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A walk-off single from late-inning replacement Brett Booth helped propel the Alabama baseball team (17-7, 4-1 SEC) to a 6-5 win over the Kentucky Wildcats (14-10, 2-3 SEC), Saturday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.

A five-run third for the Tide and a four-run seventh for Kentucky highlighted the scoring on the day, but the last at-bat single helped clinch the game and the Southeastern Conference series win for the Tide. Booth, who came in as a defensive replacement at third base in the top of the eighth, got his first SEC hit of the season when it counted. With runners on first and second, a liner to deep left-center field fell just past the diving UK center fielder to bring home the Tide win.

Alabama Finishes First Week of Spring Football Practice

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama football team moved indoors on Saturday for its fourth practice of the spring as thunderstorms moved through the Tuscaloosa area.

The Crimson Tide worked for two hours in front of the high school coaches attending the 2011 Alabama Coaching Clinic. The Tide practiced in full pads as they completed the first week of spring drills.

"It is really great to have the clinic here," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said. "I think we had somewhere between 1,100 and 1,200 coaches. I am always happy that everyone supports the clinic the way they do so we can have an outstanding clinic with outstanding speakers. It is one of the ways we offer hospitality and give back professionally to our peers and the high school coaches that do so much."

Coach Saban was pleased with the progress he has seen out of his team during the first week of practice. From an improvement in the passing game to the play of the offensive line and running backs. He would however like to see an improved physicality up front on the defensive side of the football.

"I think practice has gone a little better each day," Saban said. "I see improvements in different areas. I thought we threw and caught the ball better today than we have been. That has been a little bit of an issue. There has been a little bit of wind, but I was really pleased with the way the receivers have made some progress and improved.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 1 ranked Alabama softball team earned the series victory over Arkansas with a 12-3 win Saturday at Rhoads Stadium. With the win the Crimson Tide remains unbeaten at home and improves to 32-2 on the season and 8-1 in Southeastern Conference play.

"The offense did a great job today and continued to hit whoever Arkansas put in the circle," Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy said. "You have to respect your opponent and have to show up every day in this conference, otherwise you are going to get beat."

On her senior day, Kelsi Dunne improved to 15-1 on the season as she allowed three runs off six hits. Dunne tossed nine strikeouts which places her in sole possession of second in total career strikeouts with 1,046. Dunne is also one win away from being only the second player in Crimson Tide history with 100 career victories.

Juniors Amanda Locke and Cassie Reilly-Boccia paced Alabama at the plate. Locke collected two hits, including a home run and drove in three while Reilly-Boccia went deep and also drove in three. Freshman Kaila Hunt collected two hits and drove in a pair.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Former Glenwood standout Nathan Kilcrease, nicknamed “Peanut,” pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Alabama to a 4-0 victory over Kentucky at Sewell-Thomas Stadium on Friday night.
Kilcrease (4-1) gave up seven hits and struck out six. The complete game shutout was the first of his career and the complete game was his third.
“(Kilcrease) commanded all of his pitches, and he never really let them make a run,” UA coach Mitch Gaspard said....

Practice Report: March 25 - Spring Practice #3
Written by nxojkt | 26 March 2011

Congrats to nxojkt, still the best Bama reports on the internet.

Here's what you need to know (summarized):

- no new injuries have cropped up during the first three days of practice.

- Robby Green and Brandon Moore absent from practice. No official reason was given for his absence, but the rumor mill indicates that his future in Tuscaloosa could be in question. Once we hit practice #8, if Moore and Green are not practicing, I think we can really start speculating on their future.

- No change to injuries. Barron's is the only severe out of the group, as he rehabilitates from surgery. None of the other injuries are thought to be serious at this time.

- Tyler Love was once again working with the tackles, after spending the first two practices at center. I expect we'll see him get more reps at center, and possibly even some at guard, as the staff looks to turn him into a utility lineman.

- Don't be shocked to see him follow John Michael Boswell and Alfred McCullough as the staff's primary backup at multiple positions.

- true freshman Vinnie Sunseri, who continues to impress by being around the ball and laying the wood. The son of Bama outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri is making the move to safety, and he's furthering his reputation as an overachiever.  Cheesy

-  through three practices the overall intensity level has been good...There seems to be a fierce determination among some of the upperclassmen (most notably Dont'a Hightower, Courtney Upshaw, and Trent Richardson), and even some of the younger guys (most notably A.J. McCarron) to get the team back into the mentality that led to the high level of intensity seen throughout the 2009 National Championship season.

-Arie Kouandjio is giving Chance Warmack a real battle for the first team (organizationally) reps at left guard. ...There is real competition at both tackle spots and left guard...Expect to  see Fluker win the job at right tackle, but McCullough is pressuring for the position...Aaron Douglas seems like the guy to beat for left tackle but it is certainly not a done deal this early into the spring practices

-A.J. McCarron has stepped up his game in the leadership department, and has received rave reviews for his off season commitment in the weight room, the film room, and in voluntary pass skeletons...There is a ton of fan speculation that the loser of the quarterback battle could potentially look to transfer. If there is no starter named until the season starts, that likelihood drops considerably.

- Blake Sims and Phillip Ely both continued to work with the second units at quarterback.

-Sims is likely not in real consideration, but his skill set could see him in on some special packacges.

-Ely seems much more polished than expected for a true freshman and drew comparisons to a young GMAC.

-Alabama will practice again on Saturday, and we'll have our normal report.
