NORTH SHELBY COUNTY, Alabama -- Pinky the Elephant, a fixture on U.S. 280, is back in the spotlight today, which is where its owners hope it will be for a while.

The $7,000 inflatable elephant, which is 30 feet long and 20 feet high when inflated, can been seen in front of Edwards Chevrolet's U.S. 280 location on most days.

However, it was gone a few days this week after someone took it. The incident was caught on video surveillance. And the parties responsible for its disappearance?

A group of kids pulling a prank, including three of whom have since come up to the car dealership to apologize, Marty Phillips, Edwards Chevrolet general sales manager, said Friday.

The whole story of the missing elephant started Oct. 14 at about 11:30 p.m. when someone unplugged the power to Pinky. A few hours later, a group returned and hauled it away, Phillips said.
