I lived in NOLA when he did the original.  The Saints were a different team after that.  They beat San Francisco a few weeks later.

Most years there are 2 or 3 deserving teams that have a chance to win it all.  Only a few years are there 4 such teams -- the years Bama and tOSU were #4.

They created the playoffs because of past BCS seasons when there were 3 possible teams.

Examples of teams making a 4 team playoff that never had a chance:  Michigan State, Notre Dame, Washington, FSU (and probably 2016 Ohio State and 2015 Oklahoma).

What 4 extra teams would they have added those years?

2016: #5 Penn St 11-2, #6 Michigan 10-2, #7 Oklahoma 10-2, #8 Wisconsin 10-3

2015: #5 Stanford 11-2, #6 Iowa 12-1, #7 Ohio St 11-1, #8 Notre Dame 10-2

And I have a feeling they would have squeezed UCF in there if they were picking the top 8 for the playoffs.
