What a game of contrasts. Bama’s pass offense, when clicking, is just about unstoppable. However, their LB run fits were an out as bad as I have ever seen for a Baja defense. That is going to have to be fixed before November.

Def:  I thought the defense had tough assignment.  SC officially threw the ball 57 times.  However, I went back to see where the throws were attempted and my stats are off because I was looking to where the ball was being thrown.  Forty-one passes were thrown less than 10 yards from the LOS and 30 0f them were completed.  Twenty were thrown for over 10 yards and 6 were completed and one was intercepted.  There was also another short throw that was intercepted, but it was negated by a penalty.  For total yards, I have SC for 459 yards which included 324 passing and 135 rushing.  I have them credited with three 3 and outs, but a couple were 4 and outs as the ball was turned over on downs. I credit the D with 5 tackles for losses, 3 sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception.   For plays that covered 10+ yards. SC had 17 passing plays and 4 running plays.  Most of these passes were completed less than 10 yards, but the run after the catch made for the yardage.  They got into the red zone 3 times and turned it over on down once, kicked a field goal, and scored a touchdown.  From outside the red zone they kicked two field goals and scored one touchdown.  They had a great game plan and executed it well.  The glaring part of the defense was the yards that were allowed after the catches were made.  There were several missed tackles.

I’m very concerned about the defense. SC is not exactly an offensive juggernaut, playing their backup QB. We will have 5 true freshmen starting on defense, 2 on DL, 2 LB’s, and I DB. I don’t care how many recruiting stars they have, they are still freshmen. We still have to play LSU, A&M, Auburn (who has a lousy offense), and maybe Georgia, Clemson, Oklahoma or some other strong team. Do you think so many freshmen can gel and be effective. Also, I’m not sold on the D coordinator. I hope for the best and time will tell.

I don't know that Baja has had any kind of defense ever.

Dang spell check. Smiley Let me try that again: Their LB run fits were as bad as I have ever seen for a BAMA defense.

I think they have a chance to get the job done.  First they  have to clean up the tackling and penalties.  They probably could have gotten off the field a few more times if they had done a good job in these areas.  I don't think they can afford many more injuries.  The other thing is when teams get a lead, they tend to not play as aggressive because they want to force the offense to use clock because scoring quickly allows them to get back in the game with time left on the clock.  I do think a better running game will help.
