This past weekend, I went off to my sister's house where there was a gathering of relatives.  I only came home at night.

The first day I accidentally left the water hose running in the back yard.  The water department came out yesterday morning to see if anything was wrong.

They told me that I had used 23,000 gallons of water over the weekend. Sad Cry

Ouch, you could have filled a pool with that. I know it won't help much, but here's an e-cred.  Applause E-Cred

City water is more expensive than well water but on top of the power bill, damage to the pumps caused by sucking mud will also ruin an otherwise good day. Undecided

Addtional details. Plants floating?

Expensive yes.... Sad.  After I pay my next power bill, maybe I can forget about it and stop kicking myself for being so stupid.

Plants floating?  Well, the hose was on top of the bank of the upper back yard and all the water ran down to the lower yard into my vegetable garden.  The lower yard was ankle deep and is still wet after several days.  I'm hoping the roots won't be ruined.  It was producing really well.

Usually, I go out to the back yard more than once a day because I have bird feeders and other things to take care of....but with all the relatives in town...I didn't go out there all last weekend.

That's 3693 cubic feet of water, or almost 137 yards.

What? Are they charging by the flush down there? Seems a little intrusive. JMO :eye roll:

Not in that short a time (drowning or root rot). Plants floating-- particularly with the freshly planted w/o established roots, will come up.lol  Also water running for a long time often has erosive abilities.

We enjoy stories like this because it somehow makes us feel better next time we goof.  But for future reference, 2 would have told of water skiing squirrels, SC of how many households of normal usage it would take to equal your fu, and Chech would have politely corrected the meter reader's grammatical errors. I hope this helps.

That is 2 months of normal usage for one household.  I used 11,500 last month, which is exactly half.  Of course this is assuming that my household is normal, which it is not.  But on the specific issue of water usage, we are probably close to normal.

I am surprised they spotted it and sent someone to check. I guess these things happen all the time but also they are looking for burst pipe or leaky mains by abnormal usage.

The average 4 person family uses about 300 gallons per day.
