Took down some old wall paper int he bathroom. There were several layers. It pulled the paper backing off of the sheet rock. What all do I need to do, (step by step please, as I am slow.)

Took down some old wall paper int he bathroom. There were several layers. It pulled the paper backing off of the sheet rock. What all do I need to do, (step by step please, as I am slow.)

1. Sandpaper
2. Put some putty in holes or low spots and LET DRY OVER NIGHT
3. Sandpaper
4. Putty (Let dry overnight always, you can assume that you will letting the putty dry over night)
5. Sandpaper
6  Putty
7. Sandpaper
8. Putty
9. Sandpaper

Repeat as a necessary.  It will look perfect eventually.  The more practice you have, the less times you have to do it.

That's how you do it.

Buy your putty in the back where the sheetrock is, it's bigger containers and cheaper than the stuff they will take you to upfront.

Thanks. Do I need to sand prior to putting up the mud? ( and yes I definitely need the big bucket of mud...sigh...).

Yea sand first to get a good smooth surface for the mud, but if it's a hole or a joint you may not need to, use your best judgment.  The key is letting the mud dry all the way before sanding it down and repeating the process.

Are you going to put wall paper back on top?  If not you are probably better off just cutting that piece out and making a patch with a new piece of sheetrock.  Just cut over to each stud so you will have something to attach the new piece to.  It would probably be a lot less work to do this and finish off just the edges.  I guess it depends on how big the area is where the paper is missing.

If it is a big area and you just put joint compound over it to smooth it out and then paint over it, it will be susceptible to having little pieces break and crumble off over the years.  Think of the old style plaster walls they had before sheet rock.  That is basically what you will have without that paper barrier.  Especially in the bathroom where it will be subject to moisture and condensation when you run a hot shower.  I don't think I have ever seen an old plaster wall that didn't have major nicks and dings in it where the plaster crumbled away.

JMO.

It is all about practice though.  Anybody can do it.  Beginners just have to do a lot more sanding than the pros to get it all smooth.

Since you have already "messed up" the wall surface and it is a relatively small room, this might be a good time to experiment with your wall surface. An adobe-look or other uneven surface might be the way to go. I would suggest using google or going to diy.com and investigating alternative wall surfaces.

We never used electric, but I cant see why not, try it.  You may want to give it a good smooth down after though by hand.

We re-did our bathrooms last summer. We took down the old wall paper but it did not damage the walls. We had to sand, etc and painted. We bought new vanities, counter tops, sinks and facets at Lowes and had them installed. We had new ceramic tile floors put in a few years ago. It looks great when you are done. You will be glad you did it.

The bathrooms are cheap. Wait till you get to the kitchen.
