Is the Southern accent disappearing?

Here's an "expert" saying it's dying. He uses Raleigh, North Carolina, as the example, but Raleigh is under occupation by Yankees. Let him come to the Deep South and do research. Didn't he listen to victims of the Gulf spill being interviewed?

Baloney. This research is about as unscientific as it can get. It bases quite a few assumptions on research completed in a small area (Raleigh) and extends it into the entire South. Granted, you don't hear the strong Southern accent as much as you once did (I refer to this as the "Foghorn Leghorn" or "Scarlet O'Hara" accent) but for them to say that the accent is dying is not accurate. I don't have a really strong accent, but when I lived in Maryland for 2 years, you have no idea how many times I was asked "Where are you from?" or "I just love your accent." I wanted to freak them out sometimes by responding "Oh, I'm from South Jersey."

No, we still have the Alabama "Cracker" accent here.   Most us came from Celtic people who settled in the Alabama, Tennessee, or Georgia mountains.

But...I have heard that we are not to be referred to as "hillbillies" anymore.  To be politically correct, we are to be known as "Bluegrass Americans."

You remind me of Robert E. Lee who used to refer to Union forces as "those people" instead of "the enemy."

You make a good point here, CB. Actually Foghorn Leghorn and Scarlett O'hara are exaggerated versions of the old Atlanta southern accent. The fact is, there are many different dialects of southern accents. When I was younger, I used to be pretty good about being able to tell which state a southerner was from by their accent. That is still prevalent. That dude is a goob.
