"British scientist Stephen Hawking has branded heaven a "fairy story" for people afraid of the dark, in his latest dismissal of the concepts underpinning the world's religions."

Stephen Hawking has been wrong before, and he has admitted it to the scientific community.  Any scientist who tells you they understand the universe with enough certainty to make such statements is disingenuous at best.

I read that this morning.... Sad

I must say....Stephen Hawking is so brilliant in his field that it was more than a little disturbing to me.  How horrible to think that we cease to exist after we die from this earthly experience and that our religious beliefs are not founded on anything real.

I felt the same way last week, when a well known clinical psychologist (Smithsonian Channel) explained how the brain produces all the sensory and visual effects that make people believe that they have had a near-death experience or any kind of paranormal or religious experience.

My dad had the perfect saying for folks like Hawking. He would say, "imagine their surprise when they find out they are wrong."

It doesn't phase me one bit.  Scientists are always looking for "theories" to explain things they don't comprehend.  Nothing wrong with that at all, I do it myself.  The difference is that I don't proclaim to the world that I am a genius and have the whole universe figured out.  Scientists have been wrong before, but most are incapable of conceding that there is a possibility that their knowledge is incomplete.  Hawking himself only did so when he came up with a new theory, and he wanted to show how super smart he really was now because he is even smarter than the younger Hawking who came up with the original flawed theory.  With each new revelation many of them become even more arrogant and certain that they know everything.  The reality is that each new scientific discovery only reinforces the idea that there is much more left to discover than we realize.

Ask them a simple question:  how many stars are there?  They don't know for sure, but I bet they will give you an absolute answer.  And I bet that answer is different than what the consensus was 50 years ago.  And I bet the answer will be different 50 years from now.  Yet the number of stars does not change that drastically in such a small cosmic time scale as 100 years.

Ask them an even easier question:  how many planets are there in our own solar system?  When I was a kid the answer was 9.  Now they don't count Pluto as a planet any more so the answer is 8.  Yet Pluto is no different today than it was when I was a kid.

It is very rare to hear a scientist say "I believe" this or "I think" that.  That would be too much like religion.  They say things like "We know" this or "We have proven" that.  They know nothing and have proven nothing.  How can a mere mortal know how old the Earth is, considering there are 1000's of years of recorded history that we are aware of and the average lifespan is 70 something?  No man was there when the Earth began.  Yet some scientists will tell you with great certainty that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old.  Not 4.6, not 4.4, but 4.54 billion years old.  Now that, my friend, is a fairy tell.  The truth is we don't know how old the Earth is.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against science or scientists in the least.  I am just cautious about everything they proclaim and I don't care for the arrogance that comes with some of those proclamations.  Einstein is one of my favorites, and so is Hawking for that matter.

"I want to know God's thoughts; the rest are details."

A related saying I heard one time: if Hawking is right and I am wrong, then there is no harm and no foul. I might look like an idiot in life, but it causes me no eternal harm because nothing happens after death. HOWEVER, if I am right and Hawking is wrong .... well, I think we all know what happens there. I think I will take my chances.  Cheesy Cheesy

I am not joking.  When I was in grad school for physics at UAH we made fun of him.  He just makes crap up now.  His excuse for the math not working is that "people dont understand".  He's sick mentally.

When I say "we" I am including most of the professors.
