I know very little about them and I am toying with the idea of getting one for the project I am on.

I am looking at the ones that look like buses.

Discuss.

This thread is useless without pics.

I have thought about this myself but have never bought one.  I was thinking I would go with something that you tow.  The reason is that when you get to your destination, you can unhook from it and you will have a normal SUV or something to drive around town.  With the bus style, you would have to tow a car or something behind you it you wanted something to drive.  Also, you would have to maintain the engine/transmission etc. on the bus one even though you would leave it parked almost the whole year.  It just seems like a lot of unnecessary overhead to me.  Not to mention the added expense up front.  You are basically buying a vehicle AND an RV.  With the tow behind deal you are only buying the RV part and you should be able to get a lot more bang for the buck.

I also have a 16' utility trailer.  I have though about building or buying a camper style deal that I could set down on the utility trailer.  It would be small, but it would be big enough to sleep in and would be a mansion compared to a tent.

By camper style, I am referring to those things that you sit in the bed of your pickup truck.  They usually have a bunk or something that comes over the cab.  When you are done, you lift it off the bed and you have a normal pickup truck again.  Something removable like that so I can put it on my trailer when I wanted to go camping, then take it off when I needed to haul stuff.  It would probably have to be custom built, but that is not a bad thing actually.  I could make it a lot nicer that way.

The utility trailer idea is probably more trouble than it is worth.  The utility trailer is not that expensive, so you would not save a lot of money on a travel trailer by leaving off the wheels, axles, hitch, frame, etc.  Plus you would have to devise a way to remove it and store it off the ground when not in use.  But in my opinion a travel trailer is the way to go.

These things pay off if your company is paying a housing/hotel/motel allowance per day. The oil companies have a 110' house trailer on location for our guys(2). But smaller jobs, or inaccessible locations they stay on the rig 12 hours then switch off and go back to the motel for 12. In these instances, they can get $110 per day to use their own pull behind camper. The ones I've seen are nice, with sat tv, w/d, etc. One guy says he also uses his at home, to get out of the house, when his wife is babysitting the SIL's brat kids.

My wife has mentioned saleing our home and buying one of those Motor Homes. She wants to travel and do the work of helping build Churches, Hospitals, and schools, sort of like Carpenters for Christ. I had 33 yrs. as a State Licensed Electrician in Alabama and Georgia. The idea of traveling around helping others just pours out of her heart. I guess it would probalby take something in the cost range of $75,000 to $90,000 to do what we would need. I sure want my internet. It would probably run on Diesel.  RTR!

It was more WV being funny than your error.  I like the idea of diesel powered internets.

Anybody have any thoughts on pull behind travel trailers vs. drivable motor homes?

Two completely separate price ranges and owner demographics.
