First this:

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman wasn't in the starting lineup Monday for the third straight day as he sought the reason for his dry eyes and blurry vision.

Freeman said he can't wear contacts because his tear ducts aren't producing. He can't wear normal glasses when playing because he can't see when hitting from his closed stance.

Second, this:

This is the second time during the management tenure of Fredi Gonzalez that the Braves have had an extended losing streak, the first being September 2011′s mighty collapse.  Fredi is handling things pretty much the way his predecessor, Bobby Cox, would.  No panic, no finger-pointing, and no fiery press conferences.  But maybe with this group of Braves, that’s not such a good thing.

Third, this:

NOTES, QUOTES

--C Brian McCann made his first start since May 21. He's suffered from a major case of the flu since then, and is still raspy, sniffling and weak. But he wants to play and the Braves need his bat. He hit third Monday, going 0-for-4. But he felt good. Good enough that he expects to start on Tuesday.

--1B Freddie Freeman remains out because of vision issues. He is expecting custom sports glasses that will wrap around, allowing him to maintain his batting stance, which doesn't have him directly facing the pitcher.

--3B Chipper Jones, on the disabled list because of a severe left ankle bruise, is able to do leg presses but not leg extensions or hamstring curls, so he is concerned about atrophy in his calf and quad muscles.

--LHP Jonny Venters's ball is going sideways instead of up and down, and the reason appears to be a hitch in his mechanics. He's tinkering with the positioning of his hand.

--RHP Kris Medlen said he doesn't consistently have a feel for his pitches since his Tommy John surgery, and he thinks that's because his arm slot might be a little higher than it was before.

BY THE NUMBERS: .299 -- CF Michael Bourn's batting average, the first time it's been under .300 since April 20.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This is a nightmare." -- 1B Freddie Freeman, on his ongoing vision problems.

All I can say is I have never seen such an odd number of problems with a team.

No doubt the Braves have been hit with a major injury bug but I think their biggest problem is the bug that the pitchers are suffering from, the "long ball syndrome". In their recent series with Cincy, I thought I was watching a home run derby. They've has a problem all year keeping the opponents off base.

The Braves haven't had any "fire" for years. Francoeur hustled and played hard and Chipper hated him for it. Just no toughness on the Braves, a hangnail is an excuse for a stay on the DL for these guys.

Agree totally!!! This was true when Cox coached them. They should have won at least 3, maybe 4 World Series with the pitching they had in the 1990's into the 2000's, but they played World Series game as if it was no big deal, just another day at the ballpark. Compare that to the energy and excitement of teams like the Yankees and Twins who beat them in the World Series.

This sounds like we have to come a conclusion that the "Braves are Losers!" It's called money and fans. They get their money no matter what, and the fans keep going and paying these high prices. MHO is they should quit going and the owners would get winners back in here or would they? RTR!

Disagree with your take on this. The Braves need some high-energy rah rah type of players who can fire up the team when they need it.

Hey MD you may have something there. I'm not sure where that is going to come from right now. We have such great bats and young strong talented pitchers and nothing to really show but one spurt there for a while. RTR!
