Why automatic bids should be eliminated

This is a Jay Bilas blog that I found to be very interesting. I think Jay is one of the better unbiased broadcasters that ESPN has. His blog touches on something that I thought Bama fans might be interested in as he discusses some things that should qualify a team for the Big Dance rather than having the automatic bids. If Bama could somehow get hot and get some wins, maybe there is a slight chance they could still make the tournament. A win over hot Tennessee this Saturday would be a big start. Check the RPI of the team he is talking about.

There is no question the system is flawed. When you have auto-qualifiers from conferences like "South Midwest Athletic School of Fine Arts and Basket Weaving" and other conferences like that, the credibility of the system has to be in question.

I like giving schools from smaller conferences the opportunity to compete in the NCAA tournament.  It gives the Tournament a uniquely inclusive feel and leaves little argument who is number 1 at the end of the day.

His argument is that Murray State might not make the Tournament if they cannot win their conference.  This is not an argument against automatic bids, but against preferences given to larger conferences.  First, with a good RPI, Murray State might make the tournament anyway.   Second, if Murray State loses to Tennessee State and then cannot win its own conference, is it really as good a team as hyped to be? 

Anyway, the logic of this story is flawed,  If a team cannot do what it knows needs to be done to get into the tournament, then it doesn't belong.

I knew what the article was about, but I had to add my 2 cents. IMO, there are too many AQ's from lesser conferences. When teams like Alabama State and Rider  make the dance, they don't get any higher than a 15 or 16 seed and are eliminated instantly, while most bubble teams that were eliminated, are better teams.
