The rushing defense will be the key in Saturdays game. Wink

I'm a little surprised that the offense is only 8th in the SEC.  I know the offense isn't built on big plays and huge numbers, but still thought we would have been near the top.

Total offense at #8 is disappointing but # 3 in scoring offense is pretty good. We are also # 1 in scoring defense. Most of our games have been won by mid third quarter and CNS shuts it down and brings in the subs to simply run out the clock.

The low offensive numbers are a direct result of our outstanding defense.  Think about it.  We are very good at scoring, but we don't have a lot of total yards.  Why is that?  Because our defense, and special teams too for that matter, give us the ball back with better than average field position.  We end up scoring, but we don't have as far to go as most teams.  Our offensive yards stop once we cross the goal line.  We can't help it if we start closer than  the average team.

Also, if you look at rushing yards and passing yards separately, we will be in the middle of the pack there too because of the balanced approach we have.  This is a good thing.  Teams that are one dimensional will lead in these 2 categories.  Auburn for example, is 2nd in rushing, but 104th in passing.  Texas Tech is 1st in passing, but 104th in rushing.

Might I add, coach, that a good defense means that we needn't be in a hurry to score. Our model involves not only scoring, but taking our sweet time about it. All this produces low offensive numbers.

Right.  I was going to make that point also but I got side tracked.  Texas A&M has to score 5 million points a game or they will lose because they can't play defense.  On the other hand, if you have the game in hand during the 3rd or 4th quarter, your objective is to run out the clock, not run up the yards and points.
