UA to play hoops in Europe

This will be a very good experience for the team. It also gives newcomers Key, Hale and Taylor a chance to play with the team prior to the season starting. This is extra playing time and coaching that is allowed by the NCAA.

University of Alabama men's basketball coach Anthony Grant said Monday that UA would play a series of games in Europe this August in preparation for the 2013-14 season.

Grant said the Crimson Tide would play games in France, Belgium and the Netherlands on a trip that would last from August 8 until August 19. Overseas trips are permissible under NCAA rules and are relatively common.

UA is expected to have nine players available for the trip. It is not known if the two players transferring into the Crimson Tide program, Ricky Tarrant and Michael Kessens, will be available to participate but newcomers Algie Key, Shannon Hale and Jimmie Taylor are expected to play.

The NCAA permits programs to embark on one of these trips every four years. Alabama will be permitted to hold 10 practices while it is in Europe.

Alabama's three 2013 signees -- freshmen Jimmie Taylor and Shannon Hale and junior-college transfer Algie Key -- are eligible to make the trip.

"We had a good nucleus of guys coming back and some newcomers that were able to get involved," Grant said. "I just feel like it's a great opportunity to get them together. You get a chance from a practice standpoint to maybe implement some things, to look at different lineups, to get guys different experiences."

You get to make these type trips under NCAA rules every 4 years. Our last trip was under Gottfried in 2007. I think it will be a huge benefit for our team.
