It’s been over two weeks since a report surfaced tabbing Gus Malzahn as the front-runner for the North Carolina job.  Since then, the Malzahn-to-UNC talk has cooled — thanks in part to this video if you listen to some* — to the point where a few observers felt the Auburn offensive coordinator was considered nothing more than a fringe candidate.

That likely wasn’t the case at the time, and it’s certainly not the case now as AuburnUndercover.com is reporting that Malzahn interviewed for Butch Davis‘ former job on Thursday.  The Huntsville Times subsequently confirmed Malzahn’s interview.

Coaching at the barn will prepare him well for dealing with probation.

First, I think UNC is a good start for someone like Malzahn. Plus, their being on probation automatically gives Malzahn at least 2-3 years to make excuses about thier bad performance, it hey get clobbered the first 2 years. Thirdly, the ACC in general is in turmoil and change. Beamer at Virginia Tech is pushing 70, Miami could be toast with the NCAA, FSU is struggling, Clemson seems to be going backwards the last few games, and Gottfried is coachng at N.C. State. Personally, I don't see Malzahn being much of a hed coach, but we shall see. If he doesn't get a HC job this year, it may never happen since I don't see Auburn doing great things next year, maybe 8-4.

Yep...I would be surprised if he gets an offer but if he does he better take it if he ever wants to be a head coach.

Not really, most of us thought they would go 5-7 this year and they went 7-5. They have a favorable home schedule next year and some players got some experience this year. They still have huge QB problems, defensive problems, and Chiznik as their coach. They will be expected to go 5-7 to 8-4 next year. They play LSU, Arkansas, Clemson, & Georgia at home. They play Florida on the road, but Florida looks lost on offense.
