The specialists also return from the 2010 season. Cody Mandell averaged 39.2 yards per kick as a freshman punter, although redshirt freshman Jay Williams is expected to challenge for the job. The Crimson Tide used two placekickers effectively last season, with junior Jeremy Shelley handling the shorter kicks (including 50-of-51 on PATs) and sophomore Cade Foster handling longer field goals and the kickoff duties.
Saban has mentioned more than once in fall practice that he is looking for "more consistency" among the punters.
"Both guys are capable," Saban said in the spring. "It's just a matter of being able to execute under fire with live bullets. ... It's going to be very important for us to have the kind of quality in specialists we'd like to have, because the specialists go a long way in controlling the vertical field position by how they execute."
