ESPN showed interviews with all contending coaches for the playoff this morning. All of them except one was listing ALL the reasons why they deserved to be in the final four. Any guesses who was the one coach that didn't have to do that?  Applause E-Cred Applause E-Cred

I totally understand the Big12 concept of "one true champion."  However, when you look at the conferences that have a championship game then there is no doubt which teams actually deserve to be playing for it.  The Big12 method is fine except when you have two teams with identical records with one having lost to another and the other having lost to another still.  That is when and why the tie-breakers come into play.  Baylor, IMO is the obvious Big12 champion but are not the best team in that conference.  I think TCU would beat them if they played next Saturday.  Doesn't matter.  Looking at their losses though, TCU lost to a team (Baylor) that has been highly ranked most of the season and no one else.  Baylor lost to West Virginia who was pretty weak all season.  Looking at those losses tells me that TCU has the "better" loss which puts them higher in the rankings... Course you can take my opinion and $1.25 and almost by yourself a coke...

I agree...however...ESPN showed a graphic yesterday of the Big 12? tie breaker rules.
#1: If 2 teams have identical records the team with head-to-head advantage get the nod.

Tiebreaker Procedures
Effective June 2014

The following procedure will determine the Big 12 Conference representative to the Sugar Bowl (or alternate College Football Playoff game when the Sugar Bowl is a semifinal) in the event of a first-place or alternate place tie (for the avoidance of doubt, only Conference records will be used throughout the process):a.If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.
b.If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 4 will be followed until a determination is made. Once a team has been eliminated from a multi-team comparison, it is dropped from further comparisons. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.1.The records of the three teams will be compared against each other
2.The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed team(s) in the conference (4, 5 and 6….).
3.The highest ranked team in the first College Football Playoff poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play shall be the representative unless the two highest ranked tied teams are ranked within one spot of the other in the College Football Playoff poll. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the College Football Playoff.
4.The representative will be chosen by draw.

That's true.  However, the tie-breakers are used individually, not collectively.  The first tie-breaker that decides the championship ends the debate and all subsequent tie-breakers are at that point null and void.  Baylor is the rightful Big12 championship based on head-to-head competition per the Big12 bylaws...

Everyone keeps quoting this rule, but the lawyer in me notes that nowhere does it state that this rule determines the "Conference Champion."   All it purports to do is determine which team goes to the Sugar Bowl "in the event of a tie."  So read literally, the rule acknowledges that there could be a "tie," which I assume means a tie for the conference champion (fn), and then decides who goes to a bowl game.

The Big12 has been marketing the "One True Champion" concept because they know they could be screwed in a situation such as this, with conference co-champions.  I note that they only started that advertising this year, with the start of the playoffs.  Because they don't have a championship game, the Big12 also schedules big games when the rest of the conferences have their championship game, to keep their teams in the eyes of the media.

(fn) Because a Big12 team (or two) could end up in the BCSCG, or now the playoffs, the rule also addresses when there might be a tie for an "alternate" place.  That makes clear that the rule is not purporting to declare a champion.
