What are the chances that he takes a HC job this year?

I think he is ready to be a head coach. I think he has been ready for a couple of years. He has waiting on the right job to come along. What good jobs will be open that he would be interested in?

If he waits one more year, he might get the Florida job.

Maybe not this year but maybe next, these could be open:

Florida (2 Stater gets credit for this idea)
Virginia Tech
Nebraska
So. Carolina (Spurrier pushing 70)

I think Sumlin just signed a new 6 year deal within the last few days.  Good move on aTm's part.

Mississippi State is a dead-end, that's why I did not list it or Florida Atlantic, or some other similar program.

To me, there's a big difference between being ready to be a HC, and being a HC.  Kirby needs to prove that he is able to run a program and maintain success.

That said, Va Tech would be a good fit.  Good program but out of the media glare of the SEC.  Or maybe a place like Louisville if that were to open due to a coaching move.

Nebraska could be an excellent place to start.  They have a very proud and historic program.  They'd take care of him, I believe.

Very good point.  Nowhere near as much pressure as Florida, and he has a much better chance at success starting out in the Big 10.  They have a lot of tradition and they have been very patient with Pelini.

Wake Forest would be a good place to cut his teeth as a first time HC.

After hiring Pelini who was an assistant, I don't think they take another chance on an untested head coach.

No way KS goes to Florida, he's a Georgia guy.  And no way Florida offers another D-coordinator.

Same with Nebraska.

The recent trend in hiring, for the top jobs, seems to be going after a proven head coach instead of a coordinator.  Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas all hired experienced head coaches recently.  USC did the same.

It's the Bama model.

That's not always the case, but I think programs that took a chance on a coordinator before might hesitate to do it again if it didn't work the first time.
