If USA Today recruiting analyst Danny Sheridan is right about Robert Nkemdiche – and Sheridan has been right once or twice before – Nick Saban is an even better recruiter than we thought.

Reports surfaced on Monday that Nkemdiche, the top recruit in the 2013 class, had been shopping himself to schools as a sort of package deal. The defensive end had asked teams recruiting him to offer scholarships to two of his high school teammates.

When push came to shove, reports say, Saban refused to offer scholarships as an incentive to get Nkemdiche to sign. The highly-touted player committed to Clemson along with defensive back David Kamara and running back Wayne Gallam.

As we have repeatedly noted on this page, Saban is an easy target for lazy journalists. He puts his head down and does his job with few concerns over the media relations aspects of his job. His task is to put together the best possible talent to put on the field, and he does so with a relentless, surgical precision.

Though Alabama would love to have signed Nkemdiche – and still would, as nothing is final until National Signing Day – it’s clear Saban won’t sign a player Crimson Tide fans consider a must-have, if it means a bad deal for the team......

The NCAA needs to examine this process very carefully. If the reports of the Nkemdiche recruitment are true, it has to be assumed this is a relatively common practice among top recruits. Players already trained that a gym full of adults will rush to watch them don a ballcap will have even more reason to turn their recruitment into a play for cash, gifts and other deal sweeteners. And there are plenty of college coaches eager to offer up whatever a recruit wants.

All the more reason to be glad Nick Saban isn’t one of them

And, all the more reason we are glad CNS is our Coach

I understand that a kid may want to watch out fo rhis boys and try to help them along, but there are better ways to do that. And I have a feeling that he will greatly regret his decision in the years to come. And I have a little less respect for Dabo if he would do something stupid like that. To waste 2 scholarships just to get Nkemdiche? That will come back to haunt him when depth becomes a problem. If Nkemdiche can't take his recruitment proces more seriously than this, then I think we may be better off without him. He might have ended up being processed in the end anyway. Regardless, Bama will still be the best program in the country even without Nkemdiche, and the Tide will continue to roll.

Many times I have listened as CNS and his assistants have explained their recruiting process and what it takes to become a member of the Crimson Tide. There is more to offering a player a scholarship than just their playing abilities.

It all starts with the character of the player being recruited, on and off the field, and their playing skills is the icing on the cake. I'm not saying that all Bama players were role models when they got to the Bama campus but I am sure that CNS saw enough in that player that he could help clean up his life and become a leader on and off the field.

Nkemdiche has stepped out on a limb with a saw in his hand by holding schools hostage with his demands but I do see a good in him in trying to help someone. I said on another thread that I'm not sure his commitment will stick and helping friends in need can go sour in a heartbeat as some of us may have experienced before. I still think he's strandling a fence right now and only time will tell on his decision to stay at Clemson.

The buddy system rarely works out. Two recent examples come curtesy of the barn. Dakota Mosley came as a package deal with Dyer. Dyer has transfered and Mosley is going to jail. In basketball two players from B'ham went to the barn. CAG was recruiting only one of them. Both players transfered after their freshmen year.

This is probably what Dabo is hoping for.  Keep NkEmdiche and hope the others realize they aren't going to play and transfer out after a year.  Someone pointed out that one of the HS teammates was a legit prospect, but the other(s) are just deal sweeteners.
