Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Game notes: Georgia vs Bama

I haven't liked the play calling the last two games. Especially in the run game...seems as if all we want to do is run between the tackles. To have the personnel that we have, and to rarely get outside seems like missed opportunities. What was the point of being down by 7 and running the Jalen/Tua package? Especially when it was basically the same plays as seen in previous games. Just didn't make any sense to me and ended up being a 3 and out.
I sure hope the playcalling gets better in the next game...
The running game is determined on how the defense lines ups to certain formations. This is decided by the film study looking at formations and defensive alignments. The problem, to me, the last couple of games is the OL hasn't gotten to the second level very well. Also, I have said this before, it seems that something the OL may be doing to give the run game away. I do think Bama could run the edges a little better, even if it is the jet sweep action/pass. Watching the first sack, I think Bama could have scored if they had run the jet sweep that play or even motioned Jeudy over for an extra blocker and run Harris that way. As much as I disliked the frequency of Kiffin's jet sweeps. I'd take some of that now just to keep the defense honest with the run game. I reckon I'd just like to see our backs being able to work in space more frequently.

Just my opinion...there's no way that Tua isn't the starter as of right now. There's multiple reasons why reverting to Jalen at this point would be detrimental. The team is aware of who gives them the best chance to win. If he is not the starter, you start losing the team. Two, do you think the 5 star talent at the WR position continues to roll in when they know that the QB is not well rounded and can throw the ball? Think Blake Sims...how many receptions did any receiver have that wasn't named Amari Cooper. This year...other than Ridley, how many receptions?
Why go back to a limited playbook because personnel limitations? Does Tua stay if Jalen is still the named the starter. No way Jalen improves enough to be a top 3 QB in the draft after his junior season...

I've seen some frustration on a few message boards regarding this. My thoughts are if that a kid doesn't want to be here, I don't want him here. No hard feelings on my end. He obviously wants to play and he's seen the writing on the wall (field). For the number 2 QB...he didn't get much playing time against WKU or Kent St. I understand that Hurts needs the reps, but when your backup needs reps as well, he probably should have received more in those two games. The way the backup is handled by the coaches has been frustrating the past few years. None of them get the game experience that is needed to take over if injury happens. That being said...doesn't matter if he leaves now or after the season is over. The team will be in the same position either way if the starter goes down.

I'm with you hscoach on the RB situation. For me, it's one of the most aggravating things about this season looking forward to next year. There's a real possibility we start the year with a QB with little to no experience and the top 2 RBs with the same problem.

IMO, he has always been a strong leader. I used to always get a kick out of him getting on David Robinson's butt. I can still hear his voice "Dave! Dave!" and then he'd light into him lol They called him the "Little General" out here. I definitely think his style is suited to the college game.

Tide to meet with Avery Johnson per ESPN. Alabama will meet with ESPN analyst Avery Johnson about its open men's basketball coaching spot, sources tell ESPN's Jeff Goodman. Johnson coached parts of seven seasons in the NBA with the Mavericks and Nets and is from New Orleans. Click here for linkDon't know about Avery as a recruiter...but I like him as a coach.

I see it as a combination of poor play, or at least lapses, on both sides of the ball. Defense gave up too many big plays. And, at times the offense didn't help the defense at all (3 and outs, not sustaining drives, etc.)
Blake Sims played better than I expected. I believe, in large part, that achievement is due to Kiffin tailoring the offense to his strengths. I would have liked to have seen more balance in the passing game. I understand you want to get the ball in the hands of your studs...but, surely we have other, more than capable, playmakers at receiver than #9.
Defensively, I think there was better pressure provided by the line than in recent past. But, defensive backs with ball skills appeared to be lacking on the whole.
