No more turnovers!!!
17  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Our team so far on: September 15, 2014, 07:36:32 AM
Some fans think if every run doesn't go for 20 yards or more, and if every pass isn't thrown 50 yards down the field and completed that the team or QB or fill in the blank sucks.  I don't know how anyone can objectively look at the play of Sims or the offense and really think things are so bad.  I could understand if some fans were a little worried about the defense, because of what we are accustomed to, but not many seem to be talking about it.

VT against OSU provided a good blueprint for attacking the spread. Penetration by the DE to turn everything inside, LB close off inside lanes with pressure, lots of blitzing by lots of different people, and on third and long play a safety extra deep so he can break to either side to help the corner. I know OSU did not have their QB but VT had I think 9 or 10 sacks. Gotta think Bama has better athletes than VT.
VT stacked the box because they weren't afraid of OSU's QB.  That strategy would fail miserably against a team like Texas A&M, Oregon, or OSU with Braxton Miller as QB.

I agree with all, but will add that as our corners become more reliable, the more we will blitz. When we have had shutdown corners, CKS brings the heat often in multiple ways and gets very creative. Lately we haven't had that option and have toned it down a bit.

This is a great point.  I think the LSU-Auburn game last year is a great blueprint for stopping the HUNH.  I think you have to take some chances and blitz more than we have been.
19  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Screen pass on: September 07, 2014, 07:15:23 AM
I'm curious to see how Bama does against Florida's defense.

You mean a defense that has big athletic corners that will squat on those screens, pick them off, and run them back for TD's. Ya me too.

FAU appeared to be playing their corners 10 yards off the ball, which is why we kept calling those plays.  I'm sure if big SEC corners are "squatting", then I doubt we would even be calling those plays.
20  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Alabama QB Blake Sims' demeanor, poise in starting debut impress QB coach" on: September 04, 2014, 07:29:58 AM
Sims played well in his first start. He was not perfect. He has room to improve and there is a lot of work to be done. I was very impressed with his ability to avoid a drive ending sack. Several times he turned a negative play into a positive play. I think HSC said we only had 3/4 negative plays all game.

I think WV is a good offensive team but we will see much better defenses as we get into the heart of our schedule. We did not play like a champion this week but I do think we can get better. Sims and the offense played well. The defense must improve... a lot.

The longest pass completion by Sims was 15 yards, we can not survive with a dink & dunk passing attack. I think his lack of arm strength & "touch" will be what gets him benched. The D is a bigger concern for me. We have to be more physical & put pressure on the QB.

I'm not sure why everyone thinks Sims doesn't have good arm strength.  I know we didn't see him attempt many long throws except for the one that Jones dropped.  I have noticed that on some of the intermediate throws that they have some sizzle.  I'm not on either the Sims or Coker bandwagon.  I've just been wondering why I keep hearing this.

Sounds like everyone wants Blake to be a game manager.
Frankly, he played better Saturday than at any of the spring games.  But he'll have to improve another 30-40% to become a champion.
And that's where Bama is right now, a team with a game manager and 1st round talent around him.  Not sure that is the makings of a championship team, especially with TA&M, Georgia and the Barn all looking so strong.  But it's early, Sims looks much improved, Coker still is a question mark but apparently learning, and by the time Bama faces those teams, it will be a different team.

Very true, but I believe we won a championship with a "game manager" named Mcelroy.  But, I'm afraid Greg had a much better defense.  I think I just shot down my original point...lol

I've been wondering why we haven't heard more about Robinson.  A true freshman starting at left tackle, it would seem that this should garner more headlines.
They did a bit of film of Robinson on preseason TV coverage, ESPN or SEC Network.  Said he was more college ready than Cyrus Kouandjio or Andre Smith.   Shocked

Here's a USA Today story:  Click here for link

Thanks for the link.  I have a feeling he is going to be a good one.

24  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: "Could Alabama use a mobile quarterback? Nick Saban has an interesting answer" on: March 19, 2014, 11:33:39 AM
There is a big difference in a read option QB and a pro set QB that can scrabble and keep plays alive. It is very rare a QB like Cam Newton and Tebow can run the ball as much as they did and not get injured. A pro style QB is running to keep a play alive and looking to get out of bounds or slide before they take a hit.

I like our offense. We are balanced and present a lot of problems for any defense. We averaged almost 40 points a game last year and almost 500 yards of offense. If we get better red zone play this year we will be unstoppable.

Well said.....everyone wants to do this or that, spread or HUNH, or whatever fad offense of the moment is..blah blah blah, but if you look at our offense last year we piled up a lot of offense and scored a pile of points with what we do.  And, not to mention the fact that we have won 3 national titles in recent years with our "boring" offense...If it ain't broke, don't fix it.  With the said, put the best player at QB, regardless of style, and cater to his strengths with offensive game planning.

The million dollar question that I would like some of you to answer is-Why was Grant able to be somewhat successful at VCU and not at Bama?  I have loved how Grant's teams give more effort on defense and hustle compared to the Gottfried teams, but I don't understand how some of the this hasn't translated to more success on the court.
26  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: New Hires: on: January 14, 2014, 02:12:16 PM
It is my opinion, that the opinion of the opinions on opinion, is just an opinion.  Also, if you type the word "opinion" several times, it starts to look funny.

I'm gonna have to agree with the above posts.  Don't get me wrong, I would rather have Coach Saban than anyone else in the country, but I feel like the coaches have a lot of blame to shoulder in this loss.  Also, I think we had very poor offensive line play this year.  Not just in executing and being physical, but I would bet good money that this was the most penalized line that we have had in Coach Saban's tenure.
29  Around Campus / The Quad / False Start on: December 02, 2013, 09:03:15 AM
I've seen more false starts this year than I can remember from any coach Saban team.  Why doesn't he put butts on the sideline for a series or two to help these guys develop the self-discipline to not jump early?  I feel like penalties cost us the game more than anything as HSCoach referenced in his game notes.
30  Around Campus / The Quad / Re: Wall Street Journal Terry Saban Interview on: November 26, 2013, 08:22:18 AM
As a life-long Bama fan, those comments offend me, IF she has been quoted accurately.  Those comments are painting with a broad brush.  Student attendance at games and appreciation are not the same thing.  There are thousands of Bama fans that would love to have the seats and the money to drive to Tuscaloosa and spend the day at a game.  I don't think anyone is "spoiled".  I'm loving every minute of this ride!  I don't think there is a coach in the country that has more respect and support from their school and fan base than coach Saban.
