First, let me send congrats to the Bama players and coaches for the first win of the year.  There is room for improvement.  However, after watching a few games I do think Bama is in better shape than some other teams and they are more disciplined.

Offense:  The offense was well balanced.  In the very first series they were beaten off the ball and they were beat by a four man rush with simple stunts.  After that, they took over the LOS and ran and passed effectively.  Three different running backs played in the first quarter with no difference in effectiveness.  I did like the call on the first TD by the new OC. Also, 3 out of 4 drives in the first quarter led to TD’s.

QB:  AJ did an ok job he was not impressive like I thought he could be.    He missed some rec’s, two back to back on deep corner routes.  The 16 yard sack and he had a chance to throw the ball away hurt Bama’s chance of scoring on that drive.  I did not see him check down efficiently, as he seemed to lock in on 1 rec and a few throws were not right on target.  I thought he had the chance to look down field when he tried the little shuffle pass.  I understand this is his first live action where he was actually getting hit and I expect better from this point on.   The good thing is AJ hit 8 different rec’s and had no interceptions.  He also made a good throw on the deep ball for the TD.

RB:  Bama is loaded here.  Anyone of the top 3 can step in and start.  First, EL did well, but really didn’t have a good chance to get free.  TJY, this kid seems to have patience/vision, a burst, and quickness.  He also showed the ability to break tackles.  I really like JF.  For a big man he runs low and has quicker feet than you think he would for a man his size.  At H-back, I thought JF did a pretty good job.  There were a couple of times I thought he was hesitant on whom to block.  I also think he threw a little too early a couple of times.  Dee Hart could get lost in the shuffle.

REC:  They caught the ball well when given the opportunity.  I really like the way KB catches the ball with his hands, he doesn’t let the ball get into his body.  Eight different players caught the ball including backs.  KN and AC showed toughness with good runs after the catch.

OL: After the first series the OL had a very good game.  I know they pointed this out late in the game, but Bama had numerous combo blocks.  Bama was able to run the ball both to the left and right effectively.  DJF can crush people on run blocking, but sometimes needs to do a better job with his feet on pass protection.

Defense:    They had a great game plan that was unique for Mich.  What I mean here is the pass rush was limited because of the mobility of the QB.  They did a good job playing assignment football.  The D gave up 269 yards and 115 came on 2 passes.  I don’t see the pass rush they used in this game being effective for a team like Arky, because you can’t give that QB that much time to throw.  There were a couple of missed tackles and a few blown assignments, but nothing that can’t be fixed.  The D scored one TD, and set up another with the DM int.  There were a couple of times where the Mich QB hit the hot rec off of the blitz.  Even if Mich had their #1 RB, it wouldn’t have made a big difference.  If you get a chance go back and watch how many Mich players are knocked on their butt by the defensive players on the first int.

DL:  They played their role very well.  They stayed in their lanes and made the tackles when they got there.  No one really just jumped out at me, but with this type of game plan, they probably won’t.

LB: They all played well also.  I do know that CJM was in on a bunch of plays and had and int.  He also looked as if he was communicating the D to the other players.

DB:  DM had a great game.  If my counts are correct he had 4 PBU’s and one int which led to points for Bama.   The concern here is Bama gave up passes of 71 and 44 yards on plays that involved double moves by the rec.  Part of the problem here was the type of pressure being put on the QB by the Dline which allowed for the time to make these double moves.   I will say VS filled the lane on the option play and had a big hit.

Penalties:  Bama overcame most penalties, and the worst call was the block by 84 on the scramble by AJ.

Special teams:  Punts were good, longer than last year.  Foster looks like he has cleaned up his mechanics and is hitting the ball better, especially on the field goals.  The one he missed had plenty of leg.  The good thing is he didn’t let the miss bother him and he came back and made the next one with plenty of room to spare.

Great job hscoach. I wondered if Eddie got hurt or something his running seem to slow down in 2nd half to me. Maybe I was just hoping for more or something. RTR!

Great post coach! You broke the game down really well.

I think these statements highlight my concerns going into SEC play. We will face a number of QBs (Wilson from Arky, Bray from Tenn, Franklin from Missouri, and even Mettenberger from LSU) that will punish us with the deep ball if we give them that much time. Our DBs are good, but we can't expect them to be able to keep a receiver from getting free if we can't get the QB on the ground quickly.

I think the player that I was most surprised by was TJY. WOW! That kid really is the complete package. I am looking to seeing more of him as the year goes on.

Great first game...great win.

Excellent, coach.  I agree that AJ seemed off balance and never settled.  Michigan had a good rush at times, plus AJ made some mistakes (holding the ball too long).

I really want to see what our defensive line does in pass rush against Arkansas.  That may decide the game.  If we pressure the QB effectively, it'll be a rout.

Aside to CNS: I know which game is next, Coach.

Good read Coach. The DBs need help from the Dline to help their immaturity. The routes Michigan used were long in development. They need help to avoid the double moves. The run game was fun to watch. The Oline settled in and moved the line of scrimmage forward. Those were big holes to run through. I think TJY is the real deal.

One aspect of the CNS system is, of course recruiting. But I am pleased when I see new guys playing on meaningful downs,- getting the experience necessary to transition the depth charts from year to year. I feel I know the Tide better than most fans and can name most of our starters and backups by their #.  But a couple of times I had to get out my reading glasses and go to the roster. RTR

RTR!

I think the pressure you see against those qb's will be diffferent for a couple of reasons.  1.  I think they limited the blitz package to avoid people getting out of position and opening a hole for a qb who can really hurt you.  2.  The qb's you list do not have the escapability so there will be a bigger push to get to the qb by the DL.

You may get some opposition to that position on this (or any other) board. I think I'm on OK terms, with JC and Momma,-- and would be proud to include you on that list?  Huh?

I think the DL will be better against a less mobile Qb.  Also, I think the safeties may have been a little hesitant to help out while watching the Qb waiting for a scramble.

Something I left off my notes.  I had hoped Bama had put them away earlier to get even more reps for the backups.  However, I think AJ prevented this with a couple of mistakes.
