Unless Dee Hart transfers to UF and gets another 4 years of eligibility, they're in trouble with Coach Mac.

But UF seems intent on getting him now that Freeze is staying at OM.

Coach Mac is an offensive minded coach and UF needs offense, badly. With a good DC, I think he can turn the program around in a couple of years, maybe 3. I think he would be a good hire.
Allegedly as part of the deal, Florida would keep its current DC.

Thursday AM update (per SEC Network):

CSU won't reduce the buyout, and UF said they won't hire him unless it's reduced.  The negotiations are at a standstill.

Well, it took all of 4 minutes to call that bluff.

Quote
To settle the dispute over McElwain's $7.5 million buyout, Florida agreed to pay $3 million over six years to Colorado State and also agreed to a future game -- with a $2 million guarantee -- in Gainesville sometime between the 2017 and 2020 seasons, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

In addition, McElwain has agreed to pay $2 million to Colorado State over time, sources told McMurphy.

$3 million plus $2 million plus $2 millions =  ??

I guess the best Florida could do is negotiate the payment terms.

Colorado State actually made $1,500,000 on the Coach Mac hire.  They paid him $5.5 mil over the 4 years, and got $7 mil in buyout money. All of that $1.5 mil profit comes out of Coach Mac's pocket, since he is paying them $2,000,000 over time.  Coach Mac rescued their program from the dumpster, and they thank him by charging him $2,000,000 to leave.  These numbers don't take into consideration the money Bama paid them to come to Tuscaloosa and play, the extra tickets and concessions they sold at home games, the extra royalties on gear, the extra donations they must have received when they improved their record, etc., etc.

Good points. CSU came out like a Bandit.  But Coach Mac's agent probably negotiated, and wanted, the $7 million buyout.

When we play Fla. do you think Coach Mc would be welcomed in BDs or would he be booed? Just a thought came passing by. RTR!

I understand that a deal is a deal.  No problem.

But, why would Coach Mac's agent want the buyout?  He would negotiate for the guaranteed contract, but the buyout would be asked for by the school.  The penalty buyout is what Coach Mac had to give up to get his guaranteed contract.  Taking a long term guaranteed contract, offset by a large penalty buyout is  almost like betting that you will fail.  You will only benefit from the long term contract guarantee, if you aren't doing well, and the school wants to get rid of you.  If you are successful, some other school is going to want to hire you and that buyout will be a stumbling block.

At the top of the chain, CNS has a large guaranteed contract, with no penalties for leaving early.  That is the way his original contract was written, and my guess is that it is still that way.  He can coach at some other school, or go to the lake and watch ducks squat in the yard, anytime he wants to.  His paycheck will stop, but he won't have to pay a buyout.  And if Bama decides they no longer want his service, they will just send him the remainder of his pay checks until the end of his contract.  OHS NO, what did we get ourselves into??

Bottom line, I am glad that UF worked it out and got CJM.  One of my favorite coaches.

You answered it yourself.  The school required a large buyout (and it paid off).

I don't know about CNS's contract, and I hope we never have to worry about it.

I was responding to Prothro's comment that the agent wanted the buyout.  They accepted it, but they sure as hell didn't want it.  I pay $2.45 per gallon for gasoline, but I don't want to.  I do it because that is the price I "must" pay.  I guess I define "wanted" differently than you. No problem.  ROLL TIDE!

I also hope we never have to find out about CNS' contract.

Good points you make.  I failed to differentiate between the guarantee and buyout, although they typically go together.  At one time, it was the same penalty, for the coach or school, but you're right, they seem to be addressed separately now.   But usually doesn't the buyout amount go down over the course of the contract, the same way the guarantee would go down?  This $7 million flat rate is old school, and my thinking was that the amount would be the same if they fired Coach Mac.

CNS's contract is unique.  I think Saban is the only major coach with guaranteed money but without a buyout clause.  Mal Moore knew Saban would be a home run hire.  So he handed Saban a blank piece of paper and said, "Write down whatever you want."

Right!  I'm glad Mal knew it would be a home run, and I'm glad he was right.  So far, it looks like a grand slam, in the bottom of the 9th, in the 7th game of the World Series.

When Mal made the hire, I remember the local radio talk show host here, preaching to the Bama fans, saying:  "You're not gonna like what you get."  Well, 8 years later, we like what we got, thank you very much.
