A little update on what the team is doing this summer to get in shape be get prepared for next season. Point guard Retin Obasohan (Belgium) and center Carl Engstrom (Sweden) are playing for their respective national teams, while point guard Trevor Releford is back in his hometown of Kansas City, Mo. working out this summer. Everyone else is in T-town for the summer. I understand Obasohan and Engstrom playing international ball but I wonder why Releford did not stay on campus and work out with the team.

The team is just short of its full roster with a couple of players not in Tuscaloosa for the summer. Point guard Retin Obasohan (Belgium) and center Carl Engstrom (Sweden) are playing for their respective national teams, while point guard Trevor Releford is back in his hometown of Kansas City, Mo. working out this summer.

Pollard, a five-star prospect from Mississippi, committed to Alabama on June 1 and was the Tide’s lone signee for the class of 2012. But already, Pollard is showing why he was so highly touted out of high school.

“He’s really athletic. He’s living up to all the hype,” Steele said. “He’s going to play a huge part. Obviously as a freshman it’s going to be tough, but before the year’s over with he’s going to be a real big part of our success so we’re glad to have him.”

“Just the athleticism,” Eblen said. “He’s active, high-flyer, around the rim. He’ll definitely be a contributor early.”

Quote
Gueye says he still doesn’t feel 100 percent, but is getting closer every day.

“My body wasn’t feeling right the way it was [during the season]. But now I’m getting better with the help of the trainers,” he said. “Not 100 [percent], but I’m getting close. I feel like I’m getting my explosiveness back. I’m just trying to take it one day at a time.”

Also making an appearance at the camp was former Tide star Tony Mitchell. Mitchell averaged 13.1 points and seven rebounds per game last season, but was suspended on February 6 and did not return for the rest of the season. He has been participating in the NBA Summer League with the Sacramento Kings, but was back in Tuscaloosa volunteering at the camp.

I find this interesting. Is he just trying to give his sagging image a boost? Sounds too PR-ish to me. And then there's this.....

I think he knows he messed up, but I think he really has fond memories of Alabama. He declined interviews because he knew what the subject would be.

Yes, I don't like that Releford is working out in Kansas City.  Maybe he just wants to be around his family and play some with his brother, and maybe his game will improve, but there were rumors in April that he was considering a transfer, so I hope there is nothing to that.

Maybe he's just growing up. I hope so. I really hate to see such a great talent go to waste in the self-absorbed state that he appeared to be in last year. I'm hoping this is his way of giving something back to the University and that he has realized that there is more to life than just serving himself.

It does not make sense for him to transfer. He would have to sit out a year. He will be a junior and three year starter at Alabama. I wish he was on campus. These summer workouts is where team leaders are needed. Other than Andrew Steele and Releford the heart and soul of this team is first and second year players.

I agree that a transfer doesn't make sense, but I still don't like him not being in tuscaloosa.

Maybe the kid just needed a break. He's in T-Town, 600 miles away from his family most of the year and he misses everyone. There's more to life than BB.

 Huh?

 Huh?

He can take a break after we reach the Final Four. He is a leader and one of the few upper clasmen on this team. The lone freshman and the many sophomores on this team could use his help this summer.

Grant even allowing Mitchell in the building shows that Mitchell's attitude has improved.  Grant wouldn't allow him around if he were a distraction or negative influence.

Good point. I do wish him the best. I wish he had turned things around sooner. We sure could have used him in the dance.

I have really high hopes for this years team. If Gueye is 100%, the addition of Pollard at SF, the seasoning of our 4 freshmen, now sophomores, and the return of  Releford, we can make some real noise in the SEC & NCAA Tourney. I actually have Bama as my favorite to win the SEC Tourney. I can see us going 24-6/25-5 in the regular season.

I agree with you MD. This team can be very good. Don't forget Andrew Steele. He will be a senior and along with Releford the leader of this team.
