TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- A few weeks after Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart said landing someone with head coaching experience would be "critically important," Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart's name appears to be gaining momentum.
Multiple reports on Thursday included Smart in a revised pool of Tennessee candidates that has emerged in the wake of rejected overtures to Louisville's Charlie Strong and Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy.
GoVols247.com, SB Nation and VolQuest.com all reported that the search is focused on Smart and Cincinnati coach Butch Jones. GoVols247.com reported that Jones was the front-runner for the job, but the focus would shift to Smart if Jones turned it down.
