TUSCALOOSA – Quinton Dial admitted to nerves in the days leading into last Saturday’s Penn State game. His high anxiety had nothing to do with the Nittany Lions.
Dial, Alabama’s junior college transfer who is in the playing rotation at defensive end, was mentally preparing for his first flight in an airplane.
Dial picked the seat next to senior Josh Chapman, the anchor of the defensive line, and told him it was his first time. Chapman had empathy for the newcomer.
“I’ve seen plenty of guys that have never flown before,” Chapman said with a shrug. “They get shaken up.”
In fact, Chapman said the all-time nervous passenger he’s seen is star running back Trent Richardson.
“He still hates to fly,” Chapman said, a fact that Richardson confirmed minutes later on Monday.
“If I could’ve driven, I would’ve went on and drove,” Richardson nodded. “If I could’ve walked, I would’ve walked. I hate flying.”
