TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -

Before a record crowd of 92,310, the Crimson team defeated the White team 14-10 in the annual Golden Flake A-Day Game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.

Trent Richardson, playing for the Crimson team, earned the Dixie Howell Award given to the game’s most valuable player, after totaling 167 yards on the day (49 rushing, 85 receiving, 33 returning), including a 20-yard touchdown reception.

Quarterbacks AJ McCarron and Philip Sims, playing for both the Crimson and White teams respectively, finished the day a combined 40-of-76 for 451 yards and one touchdown. McCarron totaled 222 yards on 21-of-38 passing while Sims finished with 229 yards, completing 19-of-38 passes.

Mark Barron returned a fumble 96 yards on the game’s opening possession for the White team while Dee Hart added 17-yard touchdown run for the Crimson team.  Jeremy Shelley notched a 21-yard field goal for the White team to round out the scoring.

“All in all, I thought that we had a really good spring but the key to this team is: what’s the commitment to the standard of excellence that they need to work toward, to commit to, to play to, to believe in, to have faith, trust and confidence in, so that we can be the best team that we can be,” UA head coach Nick Saban said. “I think if we can be the best team we can be, we can have a really good football team.”

TUSCALOOSA -- Nick Saban and his wife, Terry Saban, pulled on a tarp to unveil a 9-foot-tall bronze statue of Alabama's head coach Saturday.

It now stands among the Crimson Tide's national championship coaches in the shadow of Bryant-Denny Stadium's north end zone. The others are Frank Thomas, Wallace Wade, Paul Bryant and Gene Stallings.

Saban guided Alabama to its 13th national championship in 2009. It was Saban's second national championship, his first coming at LSU in 2003.

Among those to speak during the statue ceremony were Stallings, athletic director Mal Moore and 2009 permanent captain Rolando McClain.

n front of the statue will be a plaque with the names of the players and coaches from the 2009 team.

"This statue's going to represent what that team accomplished," Saban said. "Their names are all going to be on the national championship plaque in the sidewalk so that some day their children can come back and say, 'See, my dad was part of that team. My dad did something special for the university that will live on forever.'"

Homer Smith won more hearts than games

Homer Smith may be the most revered college football coach who ever won 53 games in a 12-year head-coaching career. Smith, who died this week in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at age 79, coached across five decades. He achieved little fame but garnered, among the coaches who worked with him and the writers who covered him, an enormous amount of respect and adoration.

Georgia State head coach Bill Curry, who hired Smith at Alabama in 1988, described Smith on the ESPNU College Football Podcast this week as “the best football coach I’ve ever seen.”

And Curry played for Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech and Vince Lombardi at Green Bay, both Hall of Famers in their respective categories.

Quote
“The day after he left our staff at Arizona,” Tomey said, “I assembled the staff and said to them, ‘We need to write down all that Homer taught us." We were still writing two hours later.”

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama coach Nick Saban has already left his mark on the football program. So much so, they've already built a statue of him.

The University of Alabama unveiled the statue in front of Bryant-Denny Stadium as part of a celebration leading up to Saturday's spring game. The unveiling comes 15 months after Alabama beat Texas for the BCS national championship.

"This is certainly an honor, to be here with so many great coaches, so many people who did so much to create a standard for so many years," Saban said. "But this honor is one that represents so many people that were a part of this team.

"Martin Luther King once said, 'Being the best is something that is not a small feat.' "

Fantastic column.  Thanks for the link.

Here's the way I see it (part of this taken from an earlier post I made over on the other board):

I practically grew up in the shadow of Bryant-Denny stadium; I parked cars on Saturdays during the fall for many a year in my Grandmother's front yard (and sometimes the vacant lot around the corner). One of my earliest memories is of the sound of the crowd barely three blocks away, and the voice of the PA announcer wafting through the air, commingling with the leaves of autumn on the way to my young ears. I can remember riding my bike over to and around the stadium. I remember every single solitary smell (both good and bad) that encompassed that walk from my Grandmother's house to the stadium. I can remember the Old Gray Lady and how she creaked and groaned under the tens of thousands of feet stomping before a big play. I remember Coleman Coliseum before it was Coleman. I played basketball in the original Foster Auditorium. I worked several different jobs for the University while in school.

In other words, when I say, "Yeah, I'm an Alabama fan," it just carries so much more weight than a lot of people realize. For me, being a fan of Alabama embodies more than what people may associate with being a regular "fan."

Part of what that embodies is echoed in the history of the University.  Part of it is the respect earned for the entire South by those wins back in the 1920s.  Part of it is the integrity and class exhibited by the teams fielded by Coach Bryant.  Part of it is the fact that, frankly, the University is the state school of Alabama, and not some former agricultural school that used to have "Institute" at the end of its name.  Heck, Auburn's had four names in its history; the University of Alabama has always had and will forever have only one.  The University is even 25 years older (and has been open continuously since its inception in 1831) than that other place.

It is why, as a high school senior, I only applied to one school: The University of Alabama.

It is why, when I made the decision to go back to law school, I only applied to one school: The University of Alabama School of Law.

Being an Alabama fan has less to do with where you went to school and more to do with your experiences, your life, and how that university, that team, those players, and those shouts of joy and cries of agony in defeat are woven into your soul. "IT" is something that I feel to my core; "IT" is the common community present on that campus and in that city.

You either get IT, or you don't. It's that simple.  In my opinion more of us get it than they do.

Don't look now, but the Alabama gymnastics team that looked too young before the season never looked better than it did today.

The Crimson Tide won its fifth national championship in Cleveland, and two of the gymnasts that led the way were newcomers.

Freshman Kim Jacob won the balance beam competition with a score of 9.95, freshman Diandra Milliner tied senior teammate Kayla Hoffman for first place on the vault with a score of 9.95 and Alabama went on to finish first in the Super Six competition, scoring a 197.650.
