Here's the TS article about the scrimmage

Quote
Based on the statistics that resulted from The University of Alabama's second scrimmage of spring drills Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, one might assume the Crimson Tide's offense delievered the sort of field day similar to what it posted in last weekend's scrimmage.

Assume wrongly, that is.

Fewer missed tackles. Fewer missed assignments. Fewer big plays allowed.
Those were a few of the points Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban made clear in post-scrimmage remarks, and with one of the Southeastern Conference's top defenses returning mostly intact, it wasn't unexpected, either.

T.G. Paschal
UA linebacker Dont'a Hightower led the Crimson Tide defense with 10 tackles in scrimmage work Saturday.
"I thought the first defense was a lot better today, which we needed to be," Saban said. "That's a good thing. But we still have areas where we need to develop depth in terms of what we're doing, so we have more players that can make a contribution."

Alabama football: Crimson Tide to host second scrimmage at Bryant-Denny

TUSCALOOSA -- Nick Saban wants his defense to sharpen its teeth and bite hard.

He wants his tacklers to hook onto ball carriers and drive them into the ground. He wants the defensive front to win its battles.

Generally, Alabama's coach wants to see consistency in everything from toughness to tenacity.

The Crimson Tide's next test comes today at Bryant-Denny Stadium in the second of three spring scrimmages, which is closed to the public.

"We all know that there's going to be practice on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday," Saban said. "So they should look forward to those days with a positive energy and attitude about what they want to accomplish individually and collectively ... to improve and get the most out of every drill."

TUSCALOOSA -- The University of Alabama investigated claims Friday that impermissible benefits were used to entice a football recruit to sign a letter of intent.

An athletic department source confirmed the investigation, and said the move was standard operating procedure whenever a claim arises of a potential infraction.

Jeffrey Lee, a Rivals.com Auburn reporter, said Thursday on a Mobile radio program that an unnamed person was involved in the illegal recruitment of Russellville High running back Brent Calloway.

Calloway changed his oral commitment from Alabama to Auburn then switched back to Alabama after a visit to Tuscaloosa just days before national signing day.

This is an ongoing story.  So far, it looks like most of the activity in public view has been via twitter.

So here's the twitter pages from Bylaw Blog, EliteScouting, and the one article I have found so far.

Article from Team Speed Kills Blog

Now, there's a CBS story up with the NCAA e-mail.

Here's what the league coaches received today from an NCAA representative (the bold passage was highlighted in yellow):

I am responding to your question. If a recruiting or scouting service, such as Rivals.com, provides nonscholastic video that is not available for free to the general public, then an institution may not subscribe to the service per Bylaw 13.14.3. All recruiting/scouting services are held to the same legislated standard and we consider Rivals.com to be a recruiting/scouting service. The staff has issued a staff interpretation (4/29/09) and two educational columns (3/10/2009 and 5/4/2010) that discuss this issue generally that I have included below.

The league coaches were instructed to immediately cancel any subscriptions to Rivals.com and to report a secondary recruiting violation if they were or ever have been subscribed (paid or complimentary).

Blue chips are everywhere at Alabama, but the 3-stars are holding on

TUSCALOOSA - The Alabama football practice field has become a dense constellation of stars. The spring roster features twice as many four- or five-star players (50) as three-star players (25), according to Rivals.com ratings.

Since junior running back Trent Richardson arrived in 2009, he has seen the Crimson Tide's talent level rise significantly.

"We've got a lot more talent," said Richardson, one of seven five-star players on the current roster.

"But toughness? I wouldn't say we've got more toughness. We had a really tough team my freshman year. We had Rolando (McClain), we had Mike Johnson, we had Colin Peek. Even though he was kind of skinny, he was still tough."

The dense concentration of blue-chip players could be reflected in improved depth on a team that seemed thin in spots last season.

Tide Baseball Travels to Vanderbilt

University of Alabama baseball coach Mitch Gaspard had the look of a man who hadn't slept much the night before as he sat in his office Wednesday morning.

Following a 4-2 loss to Samford on Tuesday, the outlook was bleak with Alabama's biggest test of the season just ahead.

Midweek games against unranked, non-conference opponents should serve as tune-ups for conference play on the weekend. Instead of a quick tune-up, Alabama got dismantled.

The timely hitting Alabama had grown accustomed to en route to earning a No. 19 ranking in the polls all but disappeared. Alabama had only three hits on the night, and errors plagued the defense, allowing an unearned run. It was an example of yet another night where the pitching showed up but little else did. Taylor Wolfe combined with five other Alabama pitchers to allow three earned runs over nine innings.

Last week Alabama dropped a midweek game to UAB in Hoover, putting up the same type of anemic offensive numbers. While Alabama was able to recover last week after facing South Alabama at home before a series against Arkansas, this time will be different.

There is no second chance to get it right before a big Southeastern Conference series this time around. And to make matters worse, Alabama has to go on the road to face No. 1 Vanderbilt.

The first of the three game series is Friday at 6pmCT.  It will be broadcast on CSS and ESPN3.

With Mark Ingram having moved on to the NFL, junior Trent Richardson is finally stepping into a starters' role.

Though the rising junior from Pensacola technically has just two starts in two years, he has more than 1,450 career rushing yards and 14 touchdowns and is expected to rack up even more this year as a featured back.

Alabama coach Nick Saban heaped praise on Richardson in his post-practice press conference yesterday, and reporters also got a chance to meet with the powerful running back.

Tide looking to be dominant again up front

The standard was a lofty one for Alabama’s offensive line.

When you’re as dominant and as good as the Crimson Tide were up front in both 2008 and 2009, any kind of drop-off seems like a steep one.

That’s what happened a year ago.

Alabama certainly didn’t play poorly on the offensive line, but it also wasn’t up to the standard the Crimson Tide set the previous two years.

Injuries to center William Vlachos, right guard Barrett Jones and right tackle D.J. Fluker hurt their continuity, but nobody’s making any excuses.

The bottom line: They just weren’t as dominant up front and weren’t able to dictate to teams what they were going to do offensively.

“I think last year we didn’t quite form an identity at all or the way we wanted to form it as a power running team,” said Vlachos, who was plagued by an injury to the ball of his foot. “That’s what we are and what we will be. It’s on our shoulders to take the reins as far as that goes and establish that.

“We need to get our attitude back, competing relentlessly and dominating the guy in front of us. That’s the name of the game. We’re looking forward to establishing that identity and getting the edge back.”

BR: A Look Back on Tide Standouts in Their High School Days

The NFL draft is sometimes called the biggest crapshoot in the world, but it doesn't have anything on college recruiting out of high school.

Sometimes the ranking agencies hit the nail on the head, as was the case with wide receivers Julio Jones and A.J. Green being the top of their class as 5-star recruits.

Other times they whiff, such as ranking current floundering Texas quarterback Garret Gilbert at the top of his class as a 5-star, or Mark Ingram as the No. 17 back in the nation.

Some Alabama Crimson Tide players are right about where we expected of them out of high school, while some are not, and others are total shockers.

Here's a look, in no particular order, at where our favorite—and a few not-so-favorite—athletes started.
