Richardson takes on leadership role as No. 1 RB

TUSCALOOSA | Trent Richardson saw a certain leadership from Mark Ingram throughout the Heisman Trophy campaign of 2009, the season in which nothing could go wrong for the University of Alabama.

He saw it from him again in 2010, when a knee injury started Ingram's season began off script, a fumble helped end it off script, and too much went wrong in between for another round of trophy-raising.

Good times, bad times, Ingram had his share.

And with the role as the Crimson Tide's lead running back now squarely in Richardson's grasp, it's Ingram-like leadership that he intends to carry as much as a football.

"Mark's not here, so I have to take a bigger role," Richardson said. "I have a lot of big footsteps to fill."

Tide offensive line leading, learning

TUSCALOOSA – Trent Richardson was asked who he considers the surprise of this spring for the Alabama football team.

“I couldn’t name one person,” he said diplomatically

Running backs are wise.

Richardson did offer a group, however. “The offensive line,” he said.

Even more diplomacy? Maybe, but he was prepared to back up his answer.

“You can see how they’ve gotten better and more consistent,” Richardson said. “There were times last year they would get tired or frustrated. Now if they get tired or frustrated, they tell each other, ‘Come on, only four more plays, let’s push through it.’

“If I come back to the huddle, they say, ‘Come on Three, let’s go.’ It’s William Vlachos telling me that;  or D.J. Fluker telling me to ‘get some crunk in my system’ or something like that. That’s what they do. They are really the spark of the team right now.”

But they’re not just leading. They’re learning some new blocking schemes under new coach Jeff Stoutland that has them in the classroom as much as they are on the practice field.

Hurt: To Homer Smith I say "Deo Gratias"

The Tuscaloosa News has reported that Coach Homer Smith died yesterday after an extended illness. Cecil Hurt has an article in the Tuscaloosa News today for any of you that might have access to it.

Quote
The day was Oct. 7, 1989. The place was Jackson, Miss. And the answer was perfect.

The University of Alabama football team had spotted Ole Miss a three-touchdown lead in the first quarter. The early returns indicated that the Crimson Tide was going to suffer its first defeat of the season in spectacular fashion. But suddenly, the Crimson Tide offense, with quarterback Gary Hollingsworth, who had been penciled in as a third-teamer before a rash of early-season injuries, began moving. Then it began racing. Then it took off like a supersonic jet. The Crimson Tide scored 41 points - in the second quarter. It reeled off a staggering 62 unanswered points before Ole Miss got one late score to make the final 62-27.

After the game, I asked the architect of it all - Homer Smith, the UA offensive coordinator - a bland question.

"Coach, what did you think when your team was scoring 62 straight points?" I said.

"Two words," he answered. "Deo Gratias."

D.J. Fluker is all smiles at right offensive tackle

TUSCALOOSA -- D.J. Fluker's smile is as impressive as his work at right offensive tackle for Alabama.

When the redshirt sophomore speaks, every sentence ends with a grin and a flash of teeth. Something tells you that smile is probably the same thing defensive opponents see right before one of his pancake blocks.

Even on an afternoon where he was required to wear a protective boot on his right foot after practice, Fluker seemed genuinely happy with his place at Alabama.

"D.J. last year, he was more focused on trying to learn, trying to get things going," Fluker said. "This year, D.J.'s more laid back, watching film, trying to figure out what the defense's motives are right now. That's what he's doing. Now, since he's in his second year, he's learning a whole lot quicker."

Consider all the talk about his size, which was still on the table last week.

Fluker is listed as Alabama's largest offensive lineman, when you consider the entire package, at 6-foot-6, 335 pounds. Offensive left tackle Aaron Douglas (6-7, 275) and tackle Tyler Love (6-6, 307) are also impressive specimens of sheer size.

Following the University of Alabama's second scrimmage, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban boldly went where no head coach - at least none I have ever heard - has gone before.

He went to "bulla-bulla ball."

The specific reference came when Saban was asked about junior college transfer defensive linemen Jesse Williams and Quinton Dial, two of the more talked-about newcomers in the Tide's spring camp. Saban said both Williams and Dial were playing well "when they know what to do. When they don't, they revert to 'bulla-bulla' ball, (that's) what I call it."

So what exactly does that reversion mean? The media didn't have the luxury of seeing the scrimmage, so there was no way to detect any defining characteristics of "bulla-bulla ball." Perhaps it has something to do with Australia, Williams' native land. There is a Bulla township in Victoria. Or perhaps the two got so frustrated they started kicking the ball around. After all, Anton Bulla was a famous Slovak soccer player and coach.

Regardless of the definition, Saban's tone made it clear 'bulla-bulla ball' wasn't a good thing, and when players "revert" to it, he doesn't like it. And while Saban didn't mention anyone else playing 'bulla-bulla ball' , there was some other reversion to bad habits he clearly didn't like.

More than once, he mentioned that "some young players" had "lost their poise" or "lost their composure" as the scrimmage wore on under some of the hottest conditions of the spring. Saban was quick to define the discombobulated players as "young ones" or "down the line guys," but if it hadn't been vexing to him, he wouldn't have mentioned it.

Yesterdays scrimmage notes from ToXiK

Good morning guys, sorry for being MIA this past week, had a flu bug at the 1st of the week and at the end of the week when I got home I was so worn out from getting over it, yesterday was the 1st day I felt back to normal, but it was still a struggle so I went home last night, watched "Casino" on Starz, then crashed.

So anyway wow was the scrimmage a lot more fun than the 1st, Saban called out the leaders on D and they def responded

1st to mention is DEFINITELY Hightower , MAN, he was an absolute monster yesterday, flew around making tackle after tackle, yesterday was a warning by him to the rest of the NCAA and SEC that he's back to the 08 DH form, no doubt that he's THE leader of this team and shows it as a VERY vocal leader all day. The other 2 standout LBs yesterday were CJ and Upshaw. It was easy again yesterday for Courtney because of the hard work of the DTs keeping the middle clogged. Dial got a lot more PT and really looked good, he's a massive body already

2nd the QB battle continues and I'll tell you through 2 scrimmages I'll stand by what I said about Sims, he looked REALLY good again yesterday, made great decisions etc and McCarron continued to struggle a little bit, his mental game still suffers a bit and I know the 4 TDs with 0 ints looked good on the stat line, bu he also got more reps in goal line sets and the TDs he had were not against the 1s, BOTH of Sims TDs were against the better D group and from further out. Sims really took some more steps forward this past week and the 1 int he had was a GREAT play off a tipped pass

Oh my, Saban came out and challenged his group, Dre especially and they really responded, Dre and Menzie were both impressive and Fulton and Milliner did a good job again yesterday as well, and the head turned yesterday was Vinnie Sunseri, he had a couple hits that reminded me of John Lynch (the Tampa Bay Buc Lynch) very impressive and delivers a serious smash on tackles. In the words of Mark Barron "He looked small to me 3 weeks ago, now nobody messes with him, he's a bad white boy with pads on" I'm expecting GREAT things from Vinnie in the future and wouldn't at all be surprised to see him work his way onto the field this year, knowing the D is DEFINITELY NOT a problem for him, just a very impressive fball player so far.

The O had more of a spread feel to it in the passing game yesterday and a lot of WR's had productive numbers. Maze continued to impress, really expecting a HUGE year out of him, Kenny Bell also was probably the best looking WR, a speed demon and great hands and D White had a good day as well. Hanks did a goo job yesterday exposing a lot of zone an catching a lot of passes he's the undisputed leader of the group and also wants a huge year, Sims found Vogler and he ha a few nice catches he's better after the catch as well very athletic, like I said though the most interesting development was the schemes and groupings etc an how the passing game was used, also bread and butter play the HB screen was used a lot and TR was amazing and to that end......

Man TR is so ready to smash some heads, very impressive again yesterday, had a long run similar to 08 Arky where he looked pinned down and squirted through for a good 18 yd gain, and the BEST RB yesterday was Lacy he had improved so much gonna really impress you guys at Aday, Dee and Fowler both are steadily improving as well, great group of RB's

The D was a LOT faster as a whole unit yesterday, starting to gel together and made it tough for the O all day, we're getting there guys really starting to become a great team I feel

Alabama spring football: second scrimmage complete

TUSCALOOSA -- Judging from his sweat-soaked clothes and a raspy voice, Nick Saban had just gone 12 rounds with his players.

More than anything else, Alabama's head football coach was the judge of various individual battles all across Bryant-Denny Stadium's grass ring Saturday afternoon. Select boosters were given access, but the general public and media were not invited to observe.

So for the second straight week, Saban's voice and statistics provided by the media relations department were the only tangible items to help construct just how much progress has been made after three weeks of spring practice.

By Saban's assessment, the defense redeemed itself somewhat after a lackluster first scrimmage.

The quarterback battle between redshirt sophomore AJ McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims remains tight, junior running back Trent Richardson and senior wide receiver Darius Hanks were solid, and linebacker Dont'a Hightower continued to motor.

"I was really more pleased today," Saban said. "We made a lot of improvement from last week to this week in terms of our ability to sustain the kind of effort, play with the kind of toughness, had a little bit better execution, a little more consistency, probably made less mental errors."

Tide defense bounces back

TUSCALOOSA – Dont’a Hightower made 10 tackles. Courtney Upshaw and C.J. Mosley added seven each.

Alabama’s defense, by most accounts outplayed in their initial scrimmage last week, bounced back on Saturday. In the final scrimmage before next Saturday’s A-Day game, the defense, which returns nine starters, did a better job of tackling, pressuring the quarterbacks and limiting explosive plays. Each of those areas was criticized by Tide coach Nick Saban last week.

“We didn’t have quite as many big plays today, which is probably a good thing, but we still had a few -- and that’s still a few too many for the defense,” Saban said after the two and a half hour scrimmage, which was closed to media.

The ongoing quarterback battle between AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims continues to be tight. McCarron had a better day statistically, but Saban warned about reading too much into his four touchdown passes.

“We do so many situations between goal line, red zone,” the coach said. “A guy might throw four touchdown passes but if you put the ball on the 18-yard line he can throw two of them then, which means he’s throwing well, but doesn’t necessarily mean they were big plays or whatever.”

Bama's Scrimmage Today

The scrimmage went very  well, but it was extremly hot. I was VERY impressed with the conditioning of the veteran players, there are NO big gutted players anymore.

The two best hits I saw was when Sunseri put a big hit on Bell after a catch and Fluker just buried Chapman on a block, Chapman was shaken up a bit. Fluker is extremely quick on the snap.

The jury is still out on the QB's, but I thought Sims was the more accurate on the longer passes. When Sims hit Hanks on a post pattern for a TD it was a thing of beauty, Bell never broke stride.

Richardson opened the scrimmage with some impressive running, the man will hurt you when he hits you. Lacey is much improved, no fumbles today, he and Richardson should make a great duo.

CNS talked in great lenght about maturity today, he said the lack of this is what hurt the team so bad last year. There were only 8 seniors on the team and it really showed. The maturity that he talked about was how each player reacts to certain situations, such as maybe not being the starter for that practice or game and how they react to this. He said he does this intentionally to see what the players will do, some it doesn't bother but some will pout up.

There was a recruit there today, and he was HUGE, that CNS ran across the field to shake his hand before the scrimmage started. Looked like the recruit was there for a visit and was leaving.

The funny of the day was when he was asked if Greene and Moore were still on the team and he responded with, "did you see them out there today" ?

CNS also went in lenght to tell us how successful the football program has been with academics. He is tremendously proud of that.

Last but not least he talked about what a player and a person that Julio Jones was. He said that he respected Julio more for the person that he is than the player he was at Bama. He said he is a huge ambassador for the school.
