ESPN College Football Rumors on UA QB battle |

Published on April 20, 2011 at 12:17:25 AM
Click here for linkFor those that don't have access: UPDATE: By all accounts, A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims are indeed interchangeable as Alabama's quarterbacks. In fact, Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News concedes that both will likely get snaps in 2011 and could end up rotating to start the season. And even a third, Blake Sims, could see the field in Wildcat situations.
We're guessing Nick Saban has a clear-cut starter by the time Alabama opens the SEC season against Arkansas. Three games of musical QBs is about all most coaches can stand. But the important thing to remember is the Tide doesn't need a Heisman-caliber signal caller with top talent at skill positions like running back in 2011, and arguably the top defense in the SEC.
...
Cecil Hurt of TideSports.com writes that after Saturday's "virtually interchangeable performances" by rising sophomore QB A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims, the competition to succeed Greg McElroy may be even tighter than it was entering the spring game.
Bill Bryant of the Huntsville Times agrees, saying that the chief difference between the two appears to be that McCarron has a tad more experience while Sims has a tad more mobility.
Here's what coach Nick Saban had to say about the ongoing competition: "There are some things they have to learn that they are only going to be able to learn playing in a game. We understand the issues we have moving forward, but I would rather have two talented guys that really are committed to being good players."
August, here they come.

Alabama still searching for right combo |

Most of the news coming out of Alabama’s A-Day spring game last weekend centered around the fact that A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims are apparently dead even in the race for the starting quarterback job.
There’s some talk that they may even split snaps next season.
I still think McCarron will be the guy, although props go out to Sims for making it a legitimate race.
Clearly, Alabama has two guys at that position the team feels it can win with, and that’s always a luxury in this league. Click here for link

BR: Alabama Offensive Line & the Running Game |

No area was more disappointing last season than the Alabama rushing attack which featured two of the nation's better running backs and couldn't do much of anything. Alabama's A-Day game marked a chance to see what has been done about it. With a new offensive line coach comes some experimentation. While some changes we saw could end up permanent, some may not. First priority this spring was to find a new starter at left tackle. Alabama signed a junior college player Aaron Douglas in hopes that he would lock that down but it didn't happen. Saturday two year starting guard Barrett Jones started with the ones at left tackle while Douglas started with the twos. Click here for link

ESPN: Alabama's QB race still even |

Saturday did little to show us who has the upper hand in Alabama’s quarterback race. Redshirt sophomore A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims carried their intense battle into and through Saturday’s annual Golden Flake A-Day spring game. With both players splitting first-team reps during practice, each spent a half with the first-team offense Saturday. McCarron finished with 222 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 21-of-38 passing, while Sims finished with 229 yards and an interception, on 19-of-38 passing. It made for quite the exciting showing, but even as Alabama’s spring comes to an end, its situation under center is far from figured out. “I thought both the quarterbacks showed some promise in terms of making good decisions,” coach Nick Saban said. “Both of them got picked, which probably wasn’t a good thing, but all in all, I thought they did a good job managing the game. We didn’t have a lot of issues, and they both showed that they have some ability to play the position and play winning football at the position. We were pleased with that.” Click here for link

Geralen Stack-Eaton Wins NCAA Floor Exercise Championship |

CLEVELAND - Less than 24 hours after winning its fifth NCAA team championship, the Alabama gymnastics team picked up individual title No. 22 when junior Geralen Stack-Eaton won the NCAA Floor Exercise Championship here in the Wolstein Center Sunday. "Obviously, it was a really good weekend for our team," Stack-Eaton said. "Today was just about having fun. Bars didn't go as well as I would have liked, but it was really nice to end on a good note on the floor." Stack-Eaton scored a 9.9375 to win Alabama's fifth national title on the floor with her nearest competition scoring 9.9. She earned the win after starting the night with a fall on the uneven bars that knocked her out of contention on that event. "I'm so proud of what Geralen did and how she was able to mentally drop the uneven bars and earn the floor exercise championship," UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. "I think she has one of the great routines. Her floor routine was beautiful. She's one of the reasons we're here as team champions, and I couldn't be more proud of her." Click here for link

Good article. It has to break in a new quarterback, which should be no problem. While neither redshirt freshman Phillip Sims nor sophomore A.J. McCarron was great on Saturday, Alabama can win with either one. It also has a Heisman-candidate tailback (Trent Richardson) to replace a Heisman-winning tailback (Mark Ingram). The defense is creeping back up to 2009 levels judging by two interceptions and two forced fumbles on Saturday. Click here for link

Aday discussion |

Hey guys GREAT Aday no one hurt. I wanna do this a little differently since y'all were able to watch it. So what I tell you won't be a surprise today LoL
DeQuan Menzie had another amazing scrimmage and Jarrick and Vinnie both had great games as well our secondary is SO much better at this point than where it was a year ago.
I think you guys all saw how good the pass rush and overall front 7 is gonna be both QBs were never comfortable in the pocket and got pressured all day and part of it was how great the secondary played to allow the front 7 to focus on pressure.
Our LB corps is absolutely ridiculously talented and deep both Hightower and Upshaw are beasts and we have so many more LBs that could START at a lot of other schools
Barrett Jones had a great day at LT really as good as can be expected for just learning the position TWO DAYS AGO AMAZING! He had a really tough assignment with Upshaw most of the time will it stick? We will see
All the recruits had a GREAT time including Lacey, Chris Black, Humphries, and of course our newest commitment Ryan Anderson he he
We have a workhorse on offense in Trent man WOW! He will have a special year
Alright do you guys have any questions for me or comments about what you saw?? Things you were impressed with? Or not? Let's have a discussion

Quote:TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - It's still early, with winter workouts and 15 spring practices down and summer workouts, fall camp and a season to come, but there's a theme emerging for the 2011 Alabama football team. No stars. No problem more
