Head Coach Nick Saban, Offensive Coordinator Jim McElwain, Defensive Coordinator Kirby Smart and several student-athletes met with the media on Sunday prior to Fan Day.

Quote
"We are excited about the challenges and opportunities that this team has this year. By every indication that we've seen in the first couple of practices, we have a lot of guys that are committed to a high standard. We obviously, like every team, have some question marks and challenges. Some players on the team need to take advantage of those opportunities created by those questions and challenges and how that all works out will go a long way in determining where this team can go. It's not really about expectations. It's really about how many guys go and do their job on a consistent basis versus how many blinking lights we have of guys who don't seem to be able to get it right whether it's personally, academically or athletically. All of those things contribute to the competitive character and consistency that you can go out and play with."

Coach Saban did this...

Its a long story.

Try to make it short.  I have a relative on staff and a friend that is retiring from the navy.  I talked to Coach Saban's secretary and asked that Coach Saban write a congratulatory (sp) letter for his retirement ceremony.

Coach Saban carried around a tablet and drafted the letter himself as the words came to him.  He took the time to make sure it was perfect.  His secretary had to redate it two or three times because he wanted to sign it on the exact date the letter was typed.

He sent several historical team items.

His wife said this is the best gift he will ever get in his whole life.

The email I sent to coach sabans secretary was the following:

Mrs. Leoni,

My name is Chief Petty Officer Jay xxxx.  I am currently stationed at the United States Test Pilot School in Patuxent River Maryland.  On 2 September 2011.  Chief Petty Officer  xxxx  will be retiring here in Maryland.  He is an Alabama resident and a HUGE Alabama fan.  It is customary for the President, Governor, and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy to send letters to the retiring service members; As Chief Presley's best friend, I know that A letter from Coach Saban would top all of these Gifts.  Although we live several hundred miles from Tuscaloosa, we managed to attend nine games last year...Alabama football is Second to only God and Family in Chief xxxx's book. I am attaching a request on command letterhead with our official mailing address.  Please do not hesitate to call or email with any further questions.

Very respectfully,

Jay  xxxx

for anybody who thinks Coach Saban is an insincere person..YOU ARE TRULY WRONG.

Good morning guys, been a while, I haven't been on here because I've been extremely busy, I know y'all understand.

Losing both Winston and Gunner at QB in our recruiting efforts hurt, but getting Chris Black takes that sting away, he's our top slot WR on the board and 2nd under DGB, and the top in the state of Fla. Some GREAT news with Brent Calloway and Danny Woodson, BOTH are starting fall camp today and looking together with Marvin Shinn and Calloway will be starting his career at Bama at RB, he will also get his # 21 that he wants and Woodson was expected to greyshirt before all the transfers, so now he will also get his shot as well. The staff is VERY excited about both guys joining the team. Also I have an unfortunate injury to announce, DeQuan Menzie has had what the staff thinks might be a sports hernia, but we are not for sure how serious yet I'll update you guys as I find out more, preliminary thought is he will be ready at least by Penn St, maybe Sept 3rd. On Sentimore, he came very close to transferring to Miami, then he had a change of heart to stick it out at Bama, he will be back after Christmas after he boosts his GPA. The start of camp signals all kinds of position battles and team chemistry and bonding, I will for sure keep you guys updated after today

Alabama ready for fall practice to begin

The University of Alabama begins on-field preparations for the 2011 football season today with the start of fall camp, and respect for the team coach Nick Saban will assemble is high on both a regional and national level.

Start with a record number of players (16) on the media preseason All-Southeastern Conference team, including nine on the first team, and that UA was an overwhelming choice at SEC Media Days to win the league title. Throw in the No. 2 national ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll, released Thursday, and Saban's ever-present guard against the dangers of high expectations will see no rest in the coming weeks.

"What anybody thinks or predicts is like going to a fortune teller - it doesn't really mean anything," Saban said. "What we need to do is focus on what we need to do to take care of our business and affect what we can affect, and that's what we're looking forward to."

The last time we discussed it was before spring practice. The consensus was to nickname him after spring practice so it would be fitting to his performance, but because he wasn't 100%, he didn't play in the A day game. So yeah, I guess we are.

Well i dont mind the Monster from Downunder,Jesse should be cool with it,lol.

We will be there for the first game, cant wait!

Do you guys really think that a star player under Saban could consistently wear new suits every single game(brazenly given to him illegally by a booster no less)without getting Saban's attention, especially knowing how he pays attention to details (remember, these players walk out WITH Saban - he has to see how they are dressed)?  He knows the economic background of these players and their families - I find it hard to believe, unless Saban doesn't care, which I highly doubt.

Can any of you name a specific major violation like this that has occurred at any school Saban has been head coach?  I can't think of one, but maybe I'm wrong.

I tend to believe what Cecil Hurt stated in his column the other day - this is not an "Ohio Sate" case. I find it almost idiotic to think someone in our coaching staff (ala Tressell) is covering something up.  Alabama did exaclty what they should have done in ths case.

Kirk Herbstreit: Rising Tide and sinking Tigers

So listen up for his thoughts on the SEC in 2011.

Herbie will have the booger nation on him for this.

"My Auburn fans out there who thought I was the toast of the town aren't going to like me this year," Herbstreit said.-

"I think this team is really going to struggle. I think if they get to a bowl game, it would be a great year."

Meanwhile, Herbstreit believes Alabama's grown-up defense will return to its 2009 form and help the Crimson Tide win the SEC. But he has questions for Alabama, too.

"Really look to see whether Dont'a Hightower, not just is he healthy, but does he become the dominant force, that alpha like Ro (Rolando McClain) was?" Herbstreit said. "He kind of policed that (2009) team. Whether Dont'a can be that kind of guy is something that I'm anxious to see."

Because Alabama asks its quarterback not to lose games, Herbstreit isn't as caught up in who wins the job as the public may be.

 Cool

On Paul Finebaum's national radio show, football writer and prognosticator Danny Sheridan has come out and said that the NCAA has the name of a witness who can verify the payoff to the Newtons in the Cam Newton scandal.

Quote
Sheridan claims that up to $200,000 was given to the Newtons and Sheridan says that in many decades of sports involvement with nationally leading publications, he has never been wrong with a story not going down the way he says it will.

Article also says that Sheridan claims to have been right in 45 of 46 situations that he said would happen.

The TRUE Story of How Saban Came to Bama
Jamos

The first time that Mal ever talked with Saban,  was the night before he took the job and he had Terri with him, Mal had been dealing with Jimmy Sexton only. Sexton told Mal that he wasn't sure if Saban would take the job or not, that he had been given information that he might be interested in the job at Bama due to the Shula issue . The person that informed Sexton about Saban's interest was an ex Bama player that might have been on his staff at Miami, not sure about who he was.

Finally Sexton set up a meeting and Saban brought Terri with him. Saban had mixed emotions about leaving Wayne Huizenga, Dolphins owner, and said he would have to go home and think about it some more. Saban agreed to call Mal the next day, mid day, with his answer.

Well, the next day came and Mal was waiting on the call and it had gotten well past mid day and no call. Mal finally gave up and checked out of his hotel and headed to the airport. He was even checking his voice mail at home to make sure he had not missed the call. Mal was very distraught, to say the least ,and had no idea how he would explain to evryone about his failure. Finally the call came before Mal got to the airport, and the rest is history.

Saban never lied to the media about him negotiating a job with Bama, it all happened the night before he took the job.

Didn't CMM say that CNS showed no interest in the job and the only reason he continued to pursue CNS was because of a conversation with Ms. Terri where she said how much she and CNS liked the college game?

Yes and I think that was because of his respect and dedication to Huizenga,Terri was ready to get out of Miami. I managed the Gene Stallings Rise Tournament at that time and when CNS arrived in town he was invited to play. I took him and Cedric to the driving range before the tournament and had a chance to talk with him some. I asked him had the past couple of months been kind of tough due to the hiring process. He asked me how much I knew about the NFL and it's demands. He said it was 12 months a year, 7 days a week, and 24 hours a day and there wasn't much time for family. He then told me that the people in Tuscaloosa don't realize how happy that he and Terri were to be here.
