I am old enough to have watched many of the early episodes with Dennis Weaver as Chester,  in fact, it took me a while to get use to Festus.

I remember 'Chester' (DW) but Ken Curtis (Festus) was a better actor. JMO...

Truly sad news,as I not only grew up watching this show, but never missed a chance at a rerun. He had just celebrated a birthday a  few days earlier as well.

How many are old enough to remember Chester? He was before Festus.

I've probably seen 150-200 episodes of the show, and I think I could count on one hand how many were with Chester.  I had no idea there were 635 episodes of the show made, and Festus was only in the last 11 seasons (there were 20 total).  Those seem to be the predominant reruns they show.

The last 11 years were by far the best episodes of the show. An absolutely great show.
TRIVIA TIME:

James Arness was around 6'6 1/2 or 6'7" and he served in the Army in WWII. He was at the invasion of Anzio (Italy) and he was the first off the landing craft because he was the tallest and they wanted to see how deep the water was. He was wounded at Anzio. If you watch the show when he was older, you will see him limp slightly and favoring his leg. That was from his wounds from Anzio. He was a great American.

Dayum, thanks for that info. Long as I watched him,I never knew that. I absolutely remember his limp though later on. The man was simply a class act. I've just started ordering all the episodes over the years from Amazon and can't wait to start watching them all over again from the beginning. The mold was broken after this one, simply

That's good to know.  I always noticed the limp, but had no idea how he injured the leg.  I didn't realize he was that tall either.  I would've guessed 6'3-4.

That's because many of the actors at that time were tall so he didn't seem so tall himself. Glenn Srange (Sam the bartender) was 6'5", Roger Ewing (Thad) was 6'4", Ken Curtis (Festus) 6', and many of the outlaws were always over six feet tall.

If anything happens to the CRS MD, I have a prime suspect in mind.
