The seed for the camp was planted in a conversation between Birmingham City Councilman Steven Hoyt and Naomi Truman, the executive director of HABD and CEO of the Magic City Housing Development Corporation, a non-profit subsidiary of HABD. Hoyt told Truman of a camp Jelks had conducted in his native Gadsden.
