Title: Mike Tyson is a vegetarian now...very fit..I think it's worth a try..not easy
Post by: Crimson Phoenix on April 22, 2011, 10:16:28 AM
http://eatdrinkbetter.com/2011/04/19/mike-tyson-on-his-vegan-diet-i-wish-i-was-born-this-way-video/

I saw Mike Tyson being interviewed by Greta Susteran.  He looks SO healthy now, and claims that he feels 100% better on a vegetarian diet.

I am starting to try it.  The first two days of this week were O.K. but then I started feeling SO hungry and irritable.  I am used to eating eggs, meat, and milk along with grain, vegetables and fruit.  The plant based foods did not stick with me and I felt hungry all the time.

When I went to the refrigerator and ate practically a whole loaf of bread because of   feeling half starved to death….that was it.  >:( I baked a chicken last night and had a good breakfast with eggs this morning.

But I am looking for good vegan recipes and am going to try it again.

Any vegetarians here?   Mike Tyson sold me on trying it.  ;)

I grew up with a dad who owned a wholesale meat business - no way I'm ever going to give up all meat.   ;D  Besides, isn't bacon a meat?!  No way!

Having said that, I would like to have more meatless meals at our house but "you know who" is a carnivore who thinks beef belongs on the plate at most meals and in most dishes!  I buy pasta with meat fillings for him and cheese or mushroom fillings for me - same with lasagna.  With just two of us it's tricky and I don't slave in the kitchen but sometimes I make shrimp or scallops for me when he wants beef.

I don't have any answers - guess I just alter where I can and I try to move me a little further away from meat all the time.  I think some meat in the diet is healthy and don't really see any need to give it up entirely.

Don't you suspect that Mike Tyson has a personal fitness trainer, vitamins, etc. that he may not have talked about?

I do, and Tyson also has extreme self-discipline and high tolerance for pain I would think.  Also, a menu planner and cook.  :D

We did the Daniel Fast earlier this year. 21 days just fruit, veggies. No meat or sweets. Felt pretty good and my wife found some really good recipes. I couldn't go strictly vegetarian but would like to incorporate some veggie only meals into our weekly menus.

I think that sounds like the thing to do...incorporate some veggie only meals and cut out most sweets. Did you have more energy and feel better like Tyson says?

We really did. I think the hardest thing was just thinking about how good beef, pork or chicken would have been with each meal.

That might pass.  Tyson says eating meat now...makes him feel sick.  We sure would save on grocery bills.

My bad.  I thought the thread title was "Mike Tyson is a Vegetable".  I'd always known that, but wanted to see if CP thought it occurred during the Holyfield or Buster Douglas fights (I think it was Buster, but that's up for debate).

It's just about food, though.   :(

P.S. post.

And no, Tyson is not a vegetable from all the head beatings.  I am amazed at his intelligence.  You should listen to him sometime.  He studies so deeply into many areas.  He is very knowledgeable....self educated.

I would like to try the Daniel Fast.  I believe if there was a purpose outside of vanity to the diet, it would be much easier.

Ricky.....I watched an award winning documentary (television) called "Tyson" produced in 2010.

It was an excellent example of just how much a human being can change for the better.  He is so turned around from his former self.  He talked about his childhood on to the present.  There was film/pictures to go along with it.

Then Greta did a long interview at his house.  That's mostly about his lifestyle now and the vegetarian diet.

I am slowly working my way over to much healthier eating habits. The first key is eating habits. It would be nearly impossible to eat three meals a day and be a vegetarian. You burn the foods off WAY to fast. Eating vegetarian almost requires, eating small meals every 2-3 hours. instead of 3 meals a day, your looking at 7-8 meals a day. Something like this:

Early morning snack

Breakfast

Mid morning snack

Lunch

Afternoon snack

Supper

Evening snack.

The other trick is finding ( and eating)  good sources of protein. Protein is what gives you the "full, satisfied" feeling, that last. I like using nonfat Greek yogurt. However, it is a dairy product, so if you are looking for a true Vegan diet, yogurt would be out of the question.

( If you wanna try the Greek yogurt, here's what I do... Chop up the following:
about 12 strawberries, 2 dozen grapes, 1/2 an apple, 1/2 or whole naval orange, 1 large or two small bananas, I even added a small pack of slivered almonds last time. Mix it all up with a container of Greek yogurt. The types of fruit and amounts of fruit and yogurt are totally up to you. Start with a small amount of yogurt and keep adding until it's like you like it. EZ-PZ). You will be very surprised how filling this is, and how long you will fill full after you eat it!!!!

Oh and remember, the whiter the bread...the quicker you're dead!  ;)

My whole problem is that I really need to eat better and shed probably a good 30-40 pounds, but I am just so stuck in my ways. I have eaten like I do all of my life (lots of meat, few vegetable, almost zero fruit, and WAY to many sodas and sugary snacks). How on earth do you start to eat better when you frankly don't like many of the things you are supposed to eat? And I know many people will say will power, but that is not something I was born with.

I loved your post Reuben. :D

That's what I was thinking...eating small amounts of vegan foods more often to take care of the hungry feelings.  I hope Dannon plain yogurt will do until I can find Greek.  I never eat white bread and try not to eat much of anything made with white flour.

I also think slowly working into a healthy diet is the best...not try to convert all at once.

At least it didn't work for me this past week.

I getcha. I just get really frustrated and down with myself when I start thinking "OK, this is the day that I am really going to try hard to be good" and then by the end of the day I am snacking on a Snickers and drinking a Dr. Pepper.

Yes Ricky I did. That was the thing that got me through it. Denying the flesh and feeding the Spirit. And since we finished and I went back to my regular diet, I can feel my spirit getting weaker. I need to do this fast more than once a year.

It's a choice. But, yes it has to be done a little at a time. YOU have to take responsibility. This is what worked FOR ME, ( might or might not work for you). I waited a long time in life, before becoming a father. ( I am a 44 year old with a 5 year old son). I looked him one day,w hile he was still an infant and decided that I want to be there when he gets his diploma, and maybe even be there as on option when he picks his best man, for his wedding. At the time, I ate anything, as long as it was fried. I'd kill 3-6 Mt. Dews a day. And I was also a chain smoking barfly. Now, don't get me wrong, I still "slip" everyonce in a while. Ain't nothing finer than a fried grouper sammich, with extra (homemade) tartar. And there are some fellow tide fans who will attest to my love of beer, and rum...and jager! But when I slip, I have to assume responsibility for myself.
It's a YOUR choice bruh...no one can make it but you.

Vegetarian is Indian word for Bad Hunter  ;D

LOL...never heard that.  Good one, Taz.   :D

Personally I don't believe that a vegetarian diet is more healthful than a proper well-balanced diet that includes meat.  I'm a creationist, and further I believe God designed the Earth for humans.  That includes giving us animals to eat for meat.  This is also why I will never believe that killing for food is immoral.

Yes. I agree. But, " All things in moderation...including moderation! :D" And my post above was trying not to push a vegan or vegetarian life style, but healthier eating habits. No use in cutting out meats, but eating tons of "processed" foods. I just meat to "make conscious decisions" about life style and diet. And the fact that I am not one of those self righteous people who preach, " you gotta do it like this or else..." Hell, I wind up in the bar about 1-2 a month, and if I have drink one hand, i have a smoke in the other..."

I don't know how he keeps up with it.  It would be O.K. with me if our posts counted as e-credits....or if there were no e-credits at all.   :D  But whatever Coach thinks is best for the forum.

You are very welcome.  ;D

He'll be reading this thread before long, and you'll probably get a bunch.

Oh, and btw, I was invited to this forum by both you and ssmith general.  I thank you both, but wasn't sure if either of you got your referral bonuses.

No argument from me on that one, rueben. I completely agree that I have to choose to do this. I am 36 right now, and I really can't afford to wait to many more years before I just get my butt in gear, lay off the sweets, eat a veggie or two, and start doing more exercise than lifting the remote control. Thanks for the pep talk. #+

And right on cue, (or is it que? I never can figure that one out.) last night was a tough one.  Wife has the crud, son was acting like a ninny, nothing on T.V. and I knew that soon I'd be spending 48 hours at the FD. I have not been up to the pub in a while, I miss my friends form there, and I just finished a book, that I promised to give to a buddy of mine who works there. I slowly had to wait things out, until it was barely late enough to go to bed early. By doing that I was able to wake early, make a pot of coffee, grab a quick "wake up" shower, and then head out the door for a quick run before duty this morning. If I had gone to the pub, I would have slept 'til the last possible second, grab a shower and head off to duty, doing the least amount of anything possible. I would have also spent the rest of the day kicking myself in the butt for setting myself back on some personal goals I have set for myself. Kinda like a line I heard in an old western one time, that has really stuck with me (paraphrasing), " ...my Saturday gluttony... causing my Sunday sloth..."  meaning, what I do today has a direct effect ( or is it affect? There's another one I can't ever get right.) on how I perform tomorrow.
When I first got out of the Coast Guard I went to work for New Orleans EMS, they stuck me with a well seasoned paramedic partner. Since I was young and single, i took advantage of living in "the city of sin."  We were wroking a noon to midnight swing-shift, I'd come in a little hung over and that 6' 5" 250 lb black Mounatin I had for a partner would tell me " Bone, you can't stand on your D!(& all night and your feet all day!" Truer words were never spoken!
Roll Tide and I hope everyone has a Happy Easter weekend!!! Remember He died so that you might live!!!

Sorry for being late to this thread, but I have a lot of catching up to do.  CP pointed out the e-cred oversight to me in another thread yesterday and I gave you +25 Hannibal.

I think I am going to set up a welcoming committee.  Then give anybody on that committee permission to hand out the +25 and send in the welcome wagon.  I'm still thinking about better ways to handle this.  I thought about just automatically doing it through software on the first post, but that wouldn't be good when trouble comes along and signs up just to bash us.

Now back on topic (almost):  I am almost a vegetarian.  I only eat animals that are vegetarian.  I think that makes me a vegetarian twice removed or something like that.  Does that count?  :D
