In 1984 Miami played 49ers in superbowl. I thought for sure that Miam with Nathan, and Marino would win, with top offense. Montana and 49ers killed the Dolphins playing defense and running football. Marino set records passing yards and 60? TDs that year.

Quote
The 1970's featured several talented running backs, and one of them was Tony Nathan.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Nathan played football, basketball, baseball and ran track in high school.

With an 8-3 record, Alabama was invited to the Liberty Bowl against UCLA. Nathan showcased his throwing arm by tossing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jack O'Rear on a trick play in a 36-6 win over the Bruins. He finished the season with 480 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

Nathan's best season was his junior campaign in 1977. Earning the nickname "Touchdown," he started the season with a pair of touchdowns versus Mississippi and Nebraska.

Tony Nathan was one of my all-time favorites at Alabama. The backfield was loaded during his time at Bama so he did not get the carries or his name would be all over the record book. He had a pretty good carrer at Miami too.

I did not know Tony but I did play against him in high school. He was good. He was known for his speed but he was hard to tackle. A high school teammate and friend of mine, Steve Whitman, played fullback at Bama and blocked for Tony. Those were some of Coach Bryant's best teams.

Steve Whitman was one bad dude , and I don't mean just in football, NOBODY messed with Steve.

I saw Steve several years ago at our HS reunion. He lives in Tenn. I asked how he can stand living in Tenn with all the Vol fans. He said "its easy, I never lost to them".

Whitman was great. What memories!

While I never saw the greats of the 60s, I cannot imagine the option be run any better than Todd and Nathan with Johnny Davis at fullback. Ozzie at wide out.

If I remember correctly Johnny Davis never lost a yard on a carry. Third and short was a gimme with him in the backfield. We had a monster OL to go with those backs.
