Since he had already applied to TSU before the National Championship Game, I'm thinking there may be an academic issue involved. Maybe he already knew he was going to lose his scholarship because of grades.

I'd assume that it was a playing time issue.  With all of our injuries on linebacker this year, and he still got no meaningful playing time on D as a redshirt sophomore.  I'm not sure what his GPA stands at, but you don't have to be that bright to read that writing on the wall.

Makes sense. I thought for some reason that he was a redshirt freshman.
