LOS ANGELES -- University of Southern California left guard Abe Markowitz has a fractured left foot and will miss the 2011 season, Trojans coach Lane Kiffin announced Thursday.
Markowitz, a redshirt junior slated to start this season, underwent an MRI Wednesday that showed the fracture. He'll undergo surgery next week and sit out the year.
"I'm very disappointed in that," Kiffin said. "Obviously it's an area of concern for us. He was somebody that we were excited about, kept hoping to get him back every week. He'll have a long rehab to go to get back."
Markowitz, a one-time walk-on who earned a scholarship last year, missed the first seven games of the 2010 season with an injury to his right foot and sat out of spring practice this year while recovering from foot surgery.
In camp this year, he had started out as a center but was moved to left guard midway through and had been the No. 1 candidate to start the season opener until he suffered the injury.
