SEC dismisses reports on Mizzou invite

The Southeastern Conference dismissed media reports Tuesday that it had informally agreed to add Missouri to the conference and move Auburn to the SEC East.

"The Southeastern Conference has not agreed formally or informally to accept any institution other than Texas A&M, and there have not been conference discussions regarding changes in divisional alignments," SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said.

I listened to Finebaum yesterday afternoon. He was adamant about it, denying what the Kansas City Star reported (that the SEC was going to offer Missouri a spot in the conference). I wonder who was the KSS's deep throat?

Whatever happened to journalism in this country? In the twitter age, it is perfectly acceptable for a big time newspaper to just make stuff up without actually checking the facts. Is it really news that "a source" said bla bla bla? Everybody on the internet is a source. It used to be that the news was "this happened", not "a source says this will happen".

Journalism has gone from "Huntley-Brinkley; you can count on it" coverage to "Enquirer" coverage. It's ridiculous now. Newspapers seldom have ever gotten it right.

Exactly one of the reasons I got out of the business. I wrote for eight years, and I saw the handwriting on the wall about 4.5 years ago. That's why I went back to school to get into the lucrative history business.
