Very interesting pick. He had some good years at Cal before fading.

Quote
Fresno State on Sunday announced the firing of head football coach Tim DeRuyter, less than a day after the Bulldogs lost to Utah State to fall to 1-7 on the season.
DeRuyter was in the middle of his fifth season as head coach of the Bulldogs, but this was shaping up to be his third straight losing season following two successful ones to start his career. Offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau will be the program's interim head coach.

Perhaps more interesting than the news of DeRuyter's firing is who is likely to replace him.

According to George Takata, a host at 940 ESPN Radio and the Sports Director at CBS 47 in Fresno, former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford will be the school's next head coach

I was halfway expecting the Rutgers coach & maybe one other to be fired this week.

Schools like Fresno can possibly pick up a fired coach from a bigger school, like a Les Miles, who also get fired early. The strategy of offering a job, or taking one, under these circumstances is to strike while the iron is hot. If a coach waits for a better school to come along at the end of the season, there may be better coaches to beat them out for it. Who knows. It may get to the point that coaches on the hot seat who see the hammer falling will resign to take other jobs that come open in the middle of the season.

This ^  Plus, I think recruits (potential student athletes) can see that the school wants to win and by getting rid of a "losing" coach, they can bring in a winning coach so said athlete should definitely sign his LOI... Maybe?

It's all the things you guys have mentioned.  Plus it's putting up a "Now Hiring" sign. They may attract interest from successful, lesser known coaches who they otherwise would not hear from.

Coach Mark Helfrich is 35-13 at Oregon in 3 1/2 years. Oregon is 2-5 and still has to play an improving USC, Cal, Utah, & Stanford. They are staring right now at a 5-7 record. Is this a landing spot for Tiffin or Arizona or what?
