By now everyone knows Coach Mitch Gaspard resigned and Coach Greg Goff has hired from La Tech. A lot is going on in the off season.

Terry Rooney has been added as the pitching coach. This looks like a HR hire as far as assistants go. Rooney has spend 8 years as the head coach of Central Florida. He was 235-177 and 2014 conference coach of the year. Prior to UCF he was pitching coach at LSU. I like this hire very much.

Nick Eicholtz has elected to return for his senior year. He was a 13th round pick by the Marlins. This means we have 2 of our weekend starters returning. Friday night starter Geoffery Bramblett has signed and will not return. Saturday starter Jake Walters is back. Eicholtz was the Sunday starter. We also lost closer Thomas Burrows but pitching should be a strength of the team again this year.

Head Coach Greg Goff is still getting rewards for his time at La Tech. He has been named South Central Region Coach of the Year. He led La Tech to the NCAA Starkville Regional and had a 42-20 record.

Coach Goff has also hired Jake Wells as an assistant coach. Wells will be the recruiting coordinator and work with the catchers. He played for Coach Goff at Montevallo. Prior to joining Coach Goff at La Tech he was an assistant at Miss State. Wells was also the hitting coach at La Tech.

Thanks pmull. I was beginning to wonder how our Baseball team would be fairing next year. I think we might have an exciting next 3 years if recruiting goes well. RTR!

Thanks pmull! Sounds like so far, so good. Do you know if he's hired a hitting coach yet?

I expect Jake Wells to be the hitting coach in addition to recruiting coordinator and working with catchers. As stated in my opening post Wells was the hitting coach under Goff at La Tech. The following quote is from the article on Wells posted in the OP.

Quote
Most recently, Wells spent the past two seasons at Louisiana Tech as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator for Goff. Under his tutelage, the Bulldogs were able to improve in nearly every hitting statistic from his arrival in 2015 through last season. The 2016 offense tied the program record for triples with 19, while accumulating 112 doubles and 2,052 at-bats (both third-most all-time), and swiped 90 bases, a total that ranks fourth all-time in program history.

In 2015, his first season in Ruston, the Bulldog hitters batted .261, an 11-point improvement from the previous year. Louisiana Tech also scored 100 more runs that season than the year prior and drove in 99 more RBI as a team. The Tech on-base percentage also increased by .40 points from 2015 to 2016 under Wells.

Thanks. This hire is really starting to sound promising.

Baseball Completes Staff, Adds Derek Simmons and Michael Chadwick. Simmons is from Kennesaw State and will be the infielder and hitting coach. Chadwick comes from Montevallo and he will be Director of Operations.

Simmons is the hire a lot of us have been interested in. The hitting coach. Kennesaw had a .294 batting average with 7 players over .300. They hit 85 doubles, 12 triples, 40 HR and 578 total hits. I know the SEC is a better league with much better pitching but compare the numbers. Bama had a team .250 BA, 77 doubles, 6 triples, 18 HR and 394 total hits. One player hit over .300. This is the one area keeping us from competing at a very high level.

Quote
Simmons, an assistant at Kennesaw State the past four seasons, comes to the Capstone to work with the Crimson Tide infielders and hitters. He was previously at KSU since 2012, working as the team's hitting coach while helping tutor the infielders and contributing to the Owls' recruiting efforts.

Under Simmons' guidance in 2016, Kennesaw batted .294 as a team on the way to a 17-4 mark in Atlantic Sun play. His hitters notched 85 doubles, 12 triples and 40 home runs to lead one of the Athletic Sun's top offenses and help KSU claim its first regular season conference title in program history. Seven Owl hitters batted above the .300 mark and the team's 578 hits ranked fifth in Kennesaw single-season history.

He also played a key role in the Owls' historical 2014 season in which Kennesaw State claimed its first ever A-Sun Conference Championship and a postseason spot in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. The Owls wrapped up the 2014 stretch with the third-most hits nationally at 677, and posted a .297 team average that ranked 18th overall. Simmons also coached the hitters to a national ranking in runs (21st) and scoring (38th), while the Owls led the A-Sun in runs scored per game (6.0).
