Excellent article.

Quote
One of the more perplexing questions this college football season is what went wrong for Auburn. The Tigers were a trendy preseason College Football Playoff pick but enter the Iron Bowl this week with a 6-5 record and as a 13-point underdog at home against rival Alabama.

So what exactly happened?

Part of the answer is related to a bigger question: Why can't this program become a consistent winner? The highs are very high and the lows are very low at Auburn.

Maybe they can't be a consistent winner because nobody loves them (Finebaum discussion, any day, any year).

The barn offense requires a QB that can run a 4.4 40 in street shoes while carrying a laptop to be successful. They have not had a good defense since Bama came off probation. Even the two years they made the championship game their defense was just average.

As long as they keep using recruiting services to to their work for them rather than evaluate their own talent they will have star players that do not pan out. They have 5 straight top 10 recruiting classes and I can not remember a time they have not claimed their team is young.

Not sure if I should post this here or in the "Barn is broke" thread, but they need a new bag.

In my lifetime Auburn has always been up and down....they will have a few years of success, and hit rock bottom. I have no problem with them..I pull for them except the last game of the season.

One problem for auburn is, from what I have read here on CRS, is they spend to much money on players and not enough on good coaching. RTR!

Maybe the "bag man" has landed on hard times?

You nailed it. Bobby Lowder used his position as Trustee, bank President, & major donor, to run Auburn. Then the 2008 financial crisis hit and everything went wrong for him. He went from having around $150 million to around $10 mil. The crisis exposed his banking shenanigans, led to his "retirement" & in 2011 he lost his position as Trustee. Also, it was revealed that at least 2 other Trustees at the time had secured sweetheart loans from, guess who, Colonial Bank & Lowder. He was definitely into everything when it came to Auburn.

ARTICLE FROM 2009:

Quote
But first a bit of higher-ed theater must be played out. Auburn is a state-funded school, and the trustees' meetings are open to the public. More than 100 university staffers, faculty, reporters, and interested citizens have gathered this morning to watch the board tend to school business.

After presentations from the audit and compensation committees, the focus turns to the school's 2010 budget and to Robert E. "Bobby" Lowder, the chairman of the finance committee and the longest-serving member of the board. Because of the ailing economy, Auburn is looking at a drop-off of close to $100 million in state funding from 2008 to 2010, and hard choices need to be made. "What we're facing here is a tough situation," says Lowder. "And it could get worse."

The same could be said of Lowder himself. On Aug. 14, just a few months after Lowder, 67, announced his retirement as CEO and chairman of Colonial Bancgroup, federal and state regulators took control of the company he had founded and spent 28 years building into a regional banking powerhouse.

While I do believe this is true with the players......I think they spend too much on coaches. Auburn has always had the little man syndrome, that's part of their problem. Bama pays the best coach in America the highest salary in America. The barn pays a high school coach 4 mil and calls him the best. In actuality they have a high school coach with championship expectations. While Bama has on of the best proven DC coaches in the country and they pay him accordingly. The barn hires a damaged coach as DC and immediately calls him the best DC in ALL of football, and pays him way too much.
So the difference is, Bama is paying coaches according to their worth while the barn wants to keep up with Bama pay according to the Bama scale, not the coaches worth.
Kiffin is a good contrast to Muschamp, Bama hired a damaged OC, got a great deal because of CLK's USCw buyout. No hupla about how great an offensive mind he is, just come in and do your job. It's worked great for both parties. But Gussy hurt Muschamp by labeling him king of the world.
While I'm rambling on about this, Gussy is setting Muschamp up for the fall too. The article noted:
"Auburn is on its fourth defensive coordinator in five years."
This just tells me who Malzoom rolls under the Gus Bus to save his own hide.

I'm sorry, what were we talking about?  Stars
