On this play the holder had his right knee & leg on the ground when he threw the ball to the kicker.  But why was the holder not ruled 'down' and the play dead?  On a regular play, if a QB were scrambling and fell and threw from this position, he would be ruled down.

Is there some different rule for kick holders?

In any case, our D best be ready for a couple of trick plays/new wrinkles from Les.  He loves to have these against Bama.

I wondered the same thing.  I have seen that called before, but I can't remember if it was college or the NFL.

The holder is the only player not considered down when he kneels.  In that position, only he is allowed to hold the ball, throw the ball, lateral the ball, etc.

This ^  Plus, if the holder rises to his feet after he receives the ball at that point he would be considered as any other ball carrier and when/if his knee touches the ground he would be considered down at that point.

What, you suspect that Les Miles might not understand the rules?

BTW, the high-school rules differ on this passing-by-the-holder rule.
In hs the holder must rise off his knee first; not so in NCAA.

Anybody know what the rule is for the NFL?  I know I have seen the holder called down before because his knee was touching.

I think in the NFL, should a coach call a fake field goal, they fire Coach Williams.

I'd suspect it's legal in the NFL since he would not be down by contact and had not slid to "give himself up."

Well that is a very good point.  Shows how much NFL I watch.  I had forgotten they could get up and start running again if they fall down without contact.

I wonder if Les Myles is the all time leader in the NCAA for his success with fake field goals. The man is a genius with those things.

Fake punts, fake FGs, he is the master.  You have to wonder what he'll cook up for the Bama game.
