Snake handling reminded me of the book: Salvation on Sand Mountain Alabama.

Snake-Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia.

 Cool
West Virginia may be the last state where "snake handling" is still legal.

Back during the 1990's you would hear on the news about deaths of people bitten from snake handling in service. I am not sure it goes on like it once did.

 Cool
Just from memory but I believe the "snake handlers" here in WV total about 2,000. Again, the churches handling snakes have been outlawed in all states but one. :head held high:

The book, Salvation on Sand Mountain, starts out with the trial of a preacher charged with murder when a member of his church congregation dies after snake handling. Then the writer goes to the churches and witnesses snakes being passed around. Etc.

Did you read this book? I'm curious as to the dates. Journey into the past.

The states of Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee have passed laws against the use of venomous snakes and/or other reptiles in a place that endangers the lives of others, or without a permit. The Kentucky law specifically mentions religious services; in Kentucky snake handling is a misdemeanor and punishable by a $50 to $250 fine.[6] Most snake handling practices, therefore, take place in the homes of worshippers, which avoids the process of attempting to obtain a government permit for the church. Law enforcement officers usually ignore these religious practices unless and until they are specifically called in. This is not usually done unless a death has resulted from the practice.

In July 2008, 10 people were arrested and 125 venomous snakes were confiscated as part of an undercover sting operation titled "Twice Shy." Pastor Gregory James Coots of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name was arrested and 74 snakes were seized from his home as part of the sting. A Tennessee woman died in 1995 due to a rattlesnake bite received during a service at the Tabernacle church.[7][8]

Snake handling was made a felony punishable by death under Georgia law in 1941, following the death of a seven-year-old girl from a rattlesnake bite in a snake handling incident. However, the severity of the punishment was such that juries would never convict, and the law was repealed in 1968.[9]

The practice is legal in the state of West Virginia.

I read the book about 14-15 years ago. The best I remember is that book started out surrounding the trial of a preacher of a snake handling church of god.  One of the congregation died from a snake bite and the preacher was arrested and charged with murder. I want to say the trial was in Etowah County. The writer, Covington, covers the trial plus he attends the snake handling churches in the area of Sand Mountain and writes about the handling of rattlesnakes during whorship services.

WV- who wrote -"Once Bitten Twice Shy"?

Hey, hey, hey! I live down here, preach! Some us just go and listen to a sermon on Sundays down here. I'm not from here, though, so I ain't "Old Mobile."  Cool

CB, since you live in Mobile I am curious do you prefer a tazer or a knife when you go to church?  Grin

CB. Or a snake to pass around.

 Cool

Depends on the sermon that day. If its on tithing, I whipping out the taser.  Tongue
