Fans wait long time for Alabama autographs

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- By 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Kurt Richter’s 54-hour wait was complete.

He wasn’t about to stand second in line for signatures at Alabama’s fan day autograph session. So the Rainsville, Ala., resident arrived outside Bryant-Denny Stadium at 10:30 a.m., Friday. That gave him a 36-hour cushion over his neighbor in line.

But why?

“Why not?” said Richter said. “It’s Alabama football. This kicks off everything.”

He was later joined by three friends who were more than ready to hit the field by early Sunday afternoon. The group included Bobby Hunter of Florence. He’s been line leader for the last four years and made headlines two years ago when he had Nick Saban sign the jumper of his 5-month-old child.

“Students come by and they don’t even know why we’re here,” Hunter said. “They don’t even know about fan day.”

They brought a canopy for protection at night.

“Sleep on the concrete,” said Brock Brown, also of Florence. “The concrete is good for you.”

The game plan for Richter started with Saban’s signature on his helmet followed by Trent Richardson, Dont’a Hightower and Mark Barron.

Agreed. But the spring game and fan day give some people access to the team that they cannot afford any other way. Not to confuse this group with the ebay opportunists Jamos mentioned.
